Advice for a new build.

Hello

I will be attempting my first build in about 2 weeks. I'm just trying to sort out my parts list and pricing stuff.
To start with I'm just getting the main parts, I'll get the others a week or 2 after.
It will be used for gaming, and be connected to my 19in samsung LCD monitor, and my 32in samsung LCD TV, and A/V receiver.
And i wont be doing any overclocking.

My questions are
1. is the onboard audio good enough until i can get a sound card?
2. is that PSU enough to run everything even with the sound card and Theater 650 or should i get the 650w version?
3. is the CPU heatsink a good choice or is there something better for the same price?
4. I don't know much about memory, is that a good choice?
5. Should i bother with Vista Home premium NOW or wait and just get XP MCE oem? I just don't know about getting an oem OS just in case i screw up and need to reinstall.

Onboard Audi is great on those Asus motherboards. That power supply is more than enough, I think the Core2Duos come with a very nice HSF you don't need the Zalman.
I highly recommend getting windows XP Pro with the Vista coupon then waiting for Vista SP1 to come before you upgrade.

Not a bad list at all. I've got the same case, only in silver. You might want to beware of cable-length in it as my 4-pin mobo cable couldn't reach without the use of a legacy to 4-pin adapter which cost next to nothing.

Good list. As has already been said, you don't need the aftermarket heatsink if you're not planning on overclocking. I'm pretty sure that the cables on the new Antec power supplies are long enough to be used with their own p180 case. You might also consider getting a SATA DVD-Burner, if you can find one. IDE and the p965 chipset isn't the best combination (see the sticky thread at the top of this forum).

You might also consider dropping the processor down to the E6300. From what I understand, the E6400 is a strong overclocker, but at stock speeds, its performance over the E6300 does not warrant the price difference between the two. The next logical step up from the E6300, at stock speeds, is the E6600.

I believe you don't need the DDR2 800 ram if you're not overclocking. The C2Ds will perform just fine at stock speeds with Corsair Value Select ddr2 667 ram, and you'll save a few bucks.

I'm still wondering if I get Windows XP Media Center Edition OEM, can i reinstall it if I need to? Or are OEM OS's just a 1 time install?

Yes you can re-install it again but only on one machine at a time, you may have to call Microsoft and explain when you go to reinstall, that generaly only happens when the reinstall is done within 2 months of the first install.

I would switch out the OCZ memory for some Corsair XMS2, memory that has been proven stable (CAS5). OCZ has had problems previously with the newer chipsets, and I'm not sure if the Platinum was fixed or not.

For what it's worth, I have OCZ Platinum & a P5B and so far it's been very stable (only a week with new p.c. however).
