Time for a new PC

I think its time for a new PC. Considering I spent around $230 including a 17" Monitor for it 3 years ago thats no suprise (1.3 Duron, 20GB HD, CD ROM, Floppy with ancient Linux Distro and Mozilla).

Budget is $500 + Shipping

Heres my current proposed build:

Case: Antec Sonata II w/ 450w PS (After Rebate) $50

Motherboard: Asus M2N-MX $44

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Brisbane 3600+ (OEM) $95

CPU Cooling (to be determined) $10

Memory: OCZ SOE 2x512 800 $77

Harddrive: Seagate 7200.10 250GB 16MB SATA $70

Optical (1): LiteOn 20X DVD Burner (Retail) $34

Optical (2): LiteOn Combo Drive $24

OS: MS XP Home $89

Total: $493

I will use onboard video and sound and current Monitor, Keboard, Mouse, etc until I can do better. Eventually I would like to upgrade this system for video and gaming.

Eventually I want to upgrade to 19" Wide Angle LCD, 2GB RAM (4x512), 7600GT Video, XiFi XtremeGamer.

Pease Critique!

Looks like an awesome set up to me. Can you get the CPU with the stock HSF? If you do that you won't need to mess with CPU cooling, the stock coolers work great.

This might be a better CPU for you for 5 dollars more and it includes the HSF already.

I really want a X2 Brisbane (I understand you are a single core fan)... If I find one retail at a reasonable price I will get it.

Otherwise I will pair it with: Cooler Master RR-KEE-L8E1-GP 80mm Rifle CPU Cooler $10.
I understand this is likely the same as the OEM Cooler.

My applogies The CPU I suggested was indeed a single core and I did not notice the one you listed was a dual core.
If you can only get this CPU in OEM you can buy this as long as you don't plan on OCing

They work extremely well.
If you don't mind spending a bit more you can go with an Asus, I used 2 of those on a server I just built with 2 socket 940 Opteron and they are working great

I like the the Artic Cooling 36cfm 92mm. It was actually my first choice. That is a very good unit for the price.
I decided against it because of concerns with clearance on a MicroATX Board... If it will fit I will go with it.

In my opinion, I would rather keep my old hard drive for now, and spend that money on a EVGA GeForce 7600GT Video Card on Newegg for $89. This will allow you to have your system up and running and be doing some great gaming from day 1. You can always upgrade your hard drive, or even just add another one, or external one later on. Seeing that you won't be using hardly a fraction of the new 250GB hard drive, I'd rather spend the money on something I'll be using now

My Mothers ancient Windows 98 System just went down for the count. She will be getting my old tower including my Seagate 5400 rpm 20GB HD. However I think Im going to be at least updating the RAM. I dont think WinXP is going to run on 128.

- Go for a retail CPU box so you get the warranty and a quality heatsink fan. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103729

- Go for some Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 memory, a proven winner. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145566
