Power keeps going out
So I have this pc Im building for my mom. Its got AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Venice 2.2GHz Socket 939 Processor, ASUS A8V-E SE Socket 939 VIA K8T890 ATX AMD Motherboard, Rosewill DVD Burner Black IDE Model RD-162X, SAPPHIRE 100119L Radeon X550 256MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card, CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory, Western Digital Caviar WD800BB 80GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive, and an ATX case of course. Ive installed all the hardware and power up the pc where I get the MOBOs welcome screen or whatever.
I guess its in the POST where it mentions the fan for the cpu has failed or is running slow. It also says I can change something or other about this in the setup...So I figured Id go to BIOS and see what I can do. But the pc keeps turning itself off after a couple minutes so I cant really get in there to do anything. So...I put the cpu in there but I didnt figure Id need a heatsink and fan for it....Was I wrong? Is this a newbie mistake? Do I have to have something on the cpu? If not does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks... |

CPU's REQUIRE a heatsink/fan - you are lucky you haven't burned it up. Also - what brand and model is the power supply?

Most definitely install a heatsink fan.

If it wasn't for these forums my life would be a lot more aggravating. Thanks for the info...which I guess should almost be common sense but hey its just a part time hobby for me. Thanks again GLC.
And the Power Supply...here is a link to it http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1130980053714 I was initially worried that the case I'm using would be a problem because it has the metal stand off "bumps" in it so I couldnt just use standoffs or whatever. But according to a thread I found somewhere around here that shouldn't be an issue...at any rate thanks...Ive ordered the Heat sink.Fan and I wont forget next time. You need to use the standoffs so the motherboard doesn't ground out in the case....

It would also be wise to upgrade your power supply. Dynex appears to be BestBuy's in house brand, so who knows the quality of that unit.

That's not a 24 pin PSU. You need an ATX 2.0 unit, not an old standard ATX.
