So my first build worked, but.......
Asus MSN-E
AMD X2 3800 1 GB corsair XMS eVGA 7600 GT 500W FSP PSU ISSUE First of all the screw holes on my case don't even come close to matching the ones on my PSU, so as of now my PSU is just floating, and I'm pissed. So what do I do? are there adapter brackets I can get? Am I SOL? I was recommended this PSU buy one of you guys, so I didn't just stumble on to Newegg.com and buy it. DRIVER ISSUES? I THINK Alright, so I powered up T minus 1:30am, it POSTed, then I booted up my Win XP from 2003. IT WORKED! And, needless to say, I was pumped. But then I noticed various things like: My PCI wireless adapter's drivers were "unsigned" or something like that, so the hardware wasn't being recognized. At least I think the former is the cause of the latter. So I booted up my MOBO driver CD to try and combat this. Some of the drivers went in OK like the Nvidia stuff and what not, but other dirvers wouldn't even install becuase of yet OTHER drivers that weren't present. At least that's what I think the computer was trying to tell me. For instance, my onboard sound driver wouldn't install nor my USB 2.0 drivers, so I have a computer with no sound capabilities or USB's. I did get a prompt that said something about Win XP Service Pack 1. So at this point I'm assuming that my OS is just a little outdated, and I need to get the latest service pack, which I think is SP2. However, I haven't hooked up my internet yet, and I'm getting Comcast over ASAP. Am I on the right track? Is there anything else I should do? Could my ethernet port be in danger of not working when I try to hook up the internet to fix this problem in the first place? After witnessing the failure of my USB ports to activate I'm not ruling anything out. Thanx |

As for the PSU mounting issue, two possiblities. 1: The PSU is upside down, the second fan should be facing down for a case with the PSU at the top.
2: Trying to reuse a case from Dell or some other OEM.

Use another computer to get SP2. Download the full install and burn it on a CD.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en You will probably have to activate XP by phone before it will install. It may be better to "slipstream" a new CD with SP2 and start over. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp |

And why would I have to activate windows by phone? What is "slipstreaming"? So SP2 won't just install like a normal freakin program? Geeze. thanks |

Yyyyyyeah. I just looked at the slipstream site, and I think I'd need one of you to teleport to my house and walk me through it.
When I get internet can I not just download SP2? With my work connection it'll take 10hours to download, then I have to burn, then finally it has to actually work, and to top it off you're talking about having to activate by phone. I'm going to learn more than I wanted to. : ) I'm about to run out and buy Vista. |

The first thing I would get is the driver to get your wireless adapter working (or the ethernet if you can plug in). Once you can get on line, you can get the other drivers from the manufacturers sites. Drivers should be on disks that you received, to at least get up an running. Then you can go out and get the latest drivers.

Comcast will be at my house between 8 and 10am tomorrow to hook me up. ![]() At the very least, will my ethernet port be functional? I'm pretty sure my MOBO driver CD ran through a few install prompts that said "ethernet". So I'm fairly confident it's good to go. But I just don't want Comcast to get here and not be able to hook me up. I think I'd fly into a rage. |

Check in Device Manager to see if there are any yellow exclamation marks for the Network adapter. If your ethernet card is identified correctly under Network adapter you should be good to go.

SP2 will not install on an unactivated copy of XP. To activate, if you don't have Internet access, you have to do it by phone.

COMCAST JUST LEFT, and once again, finally, I'm rockin a cable connection, playing hooky from work on a Friday. Just livin it up.
I love working in R&D. SP2 and all my updates downloaded just fine. I think I'm good to go. Next is to test out my video card with F.E.A.R. Wish me luck. I have some more questions but I think they belong in another forum. Thanks again |
