Nvidia 8800 GTS, what's a good motherboard?

I recently purchased an Nvidia 8800 GTS, and now am looking to upgrade the motherboard and processor with a max budget of $800 (unless it's something that wouldn't need to be replaced for a while heh). This upgrade would be for gaming and 3D model rendering, and I've never really replaced the motherboard or processor in a computer before. I've been reading tons of reviews and suggestions and seem to be leaning more for Intel's Core 2...but I'd really like to get more opinions before I go and make a purchase I might regret. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Might be a good idea to list the legacy components that need to work with the new MoBo.

MoBo:
Asus P5B $120
2 x ATA100
5 x SATA 3.0 - Internal
1 x SATA 3.0 - External

CPU:
E6300 $183
E6400 $221
E6600 $313
E6700 $512
(I think the E6300 / E6600 are best price / performance)

RAM DDR2 800:
OCZ Vista Upgrade 2 x 1 GB $185
(Mobo prefers 1.8V / CAS 5).

I assume you already have a quality PSU.

At the moment I have a Mushkin 550W PSU. I have 1 GB of Corsair DDR PC3200 (2 sticks of 512 mb), but can easily upgrade that if necessary. I have a Creative SB Audigy sound card. Can't remember what the DVD drive is right now.

Thanks for the fast reply Gene1, I'll definitely look into your suggestions

I think you are looking at new RAM unfortunately. I can't find any motherboards on Newegg that support DDR and Core 2 Duo - at least any worthwhile ones. All the new boards are DDR2.

You really need to fully list legacy parts.

The P5B is a great Mobo but it is really set up for SATA, not IDE. So if you plan to use IDE hard drives and DVD drives it may not be right for you.

List all the current parts you plan to use in this system so we know what the mother board has to support.

I apologize. Here's a list of what I have:

(bought this computer from Alienware around 2 years ago)
2 SATA Hard drives Raid 0
IDE DVD/CD-Rom (depending on price, I can upgrade this drive to fit a good mobo)
Mushkin 550W PSU
1 GB of Corsair DDR PC3200 (Thanks for the info Blue60007, I have no problems tracking down some new RAM for my upgrade)
Creative SB Audigy sound card
PS/2 keyboard and USB optical mouse.

The mobo I'm using right now is an Asus A8V Athlon64 with a AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 2.4 GHz.

Think that's it, thank you all very much for helping me out

Asus P5B-E would be what you want for a Core 2 Duo. NOTE that you will need to back up your data because the RAID array will not make the switch. It will have to be recreated, you will lose everything, Windows and all software will have to be installed from scratch.

Ok, after reading hundreds of reviews on multiple Asus P5B boards, I've narrowed it down to these three:

Asus P5B-E
Asus P5B Deluxe
Asus P5B Premium Vista Edition

The processor I'm pretty sure on is the Core Duo E6600.

I've been reading that there are a lot of Bios issues on the first two boards with Core Duo. Is that really true? I've also read that the first two don't support Vista. Not that I'm getting Vista soon, I might just not want to close the door on that one though.

I'm quite torn between those three boards, any suggestions?

Thank you very much for your help!

As highly as the P5B is rated by members of this forum I would think that the bios issues, if they actually where a problem, have been fixed. As far as I know all will support Vista. Did the article your read say why they did not support Vista? As to which board to chose it is all about bells and whistles. Go to Newegg and compare the boards and see which one has options you would use or need. The P5B – E seems to be the most popular because the basic P5B does not offer on-board firewire support. I did not see any options on the other two which would make me want to pay more for them.

Send a message via AIM to Mr.Ferrari
If you want very high overclocking capabilities and a bit more quality then go for the P5B Deluxe. Otherwise stick to the P5B-E.
