New build, Bios not seeing SATA HDD

This is my first post, and my first new build. I go into Bios for the setup and everything is "seen" except the SATA HDD. I have read on other posts and forums that I need to load SATA drivers into the Bios. Is this correct? How do I do this? I have tried different SATA cables, and SATA slots, but it still does not recognize the HD. I am using the SATA power connector from the PS, and no I did not connect both types of power connectors to the HDD. I seem to know how all the hardware connects, but admittedly I am weak on software and how to initialize the computer, (but willing to learn).

I am thinking of going with a new IDE drive, but I thought I would ask first.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanx,
b

you probably need to format the drive for the bios to see it. download the program from western digital to do that. either make a bootable cd or floppy.

tempus, I don't believe that's correct. You need to format the drive for Windows to see it, but not for the BIOS. Ususally, if the BIOS does not detect a SATA drive immediately, it means the SATA controller is third-party, and not native to the motherboard's chipset.

ricky, is this system the one detailed in your signature?

Yes it is. Let me know if you need more info. I'm not sure how to tell if it is third party or not, or where to look for it.

It isn't third party on that board, it's native to the chipset. I'm not familiar with the BIOS on your specific board, but have a look in the advanced settings. Make sure the S-ATA ports are activated. You may have to choose between something along the lines of RAID, or IDE Emulation - try the latter first.

FK, Thanks for the reply. I believe the SATA ports are enabled, but I need to check the RAID or IDE emulation in advanced. I will inform when I check later today.
Thanks, LR

If it's a single drive, you want IDE emulation.

OK, here is some more information from Bios. I don't know where the IDE emulation setting is, and yes I am only using a single drive, although I have thought about getting an IDE drive just to get the thing to work. So it looks like I either use IDE emulation or RAID, correct???

Bios v6.00PG
Bios Revision 0301

Bios Setup

Advanced > IDE Function Setup

Onchip IDE channel 0 Enabled
Onchip IDE channel 1 Enabled
SATA Port 1,2 Enabled
SATA DMA Transfer Enabled
SATA Port 3,4 Enabled
SATA 2 DMA Transfer Enabled
IDE Prefetch Mode Enabled

Advanced > NVRAID Configuration

RAID Enable Disabled
X SATA 1 Disabled
X SATA 2 Disabled
X SATA 3 Disabled
X SATA 4 Disabled
(enabling RAID enable takes the X’s away)

Onboard nVidia Lan Disabled
X Onboard Lan Boot Rom Disabled

I can get WXP64 to load all the way until it says connot find HD to load on.

Thanks for any help.

Some more info, I was able to make the floppy disk from the ASUS cdrom, but I don't know what to do with it. It has 8 files on it. If I need to, I will pull the files for you all to see.

You have your power supply listed as "450 watt" but no brand. I'm suspecting it's a psu that came in the case. If so, many of those are notoriously of poor quality. I'm wondering if your power connector may not be providing power to your hard drive. Could be from a dead branch or a bad connector. Do you have a volt meter to check and see if power is there? Or can you try a different connector on the psu?

When you start Setup, watch the bottom of the screen. When it says to press F6 to install a 3rd party mass storage driver, press it and put the floppy in the drive.

PANAMA RED..You are my hero. Checked the PS connectors. Red=5 volts..Yellow = 3.43 volts..ouch. So I used the same PS cable that is with the cdrom (legacy) and checked..it had the 12 volts. So I hooked it up and it immediately found the SATA drive. Right now I am loading WINXP. I figured when you buy something new, it should work. What's a good brand of PS?

I'll keep you updated. Thanks, and more thanks,

Hey, thanks for all the suggestions. As always, I will do my homework, freakitchen that one looks like a good buy, and it is on the 'good' list.

WINXP is loaded and running.

This forum rocks.
Thanks to all.

Congrats lr! Glad that off the wall idea paid off. I've never seen that type of problem personally but I heard of it happening one time to a friend's pc. Enjoy your new creation too!

Oh, so the SATA power connector had flakey voltages going to it? What brand is that power supply?
