Exclamation Will this build be compatible?

Hi, I am new to making computers. Right now I only have a laptop, and it is not meeting my needs for playing newer games. I want to build a desktop PC, so I have been browsing on NewEgg.com. I do not know that much about hardware, so I'm wondering... are all of these compatible with eachother? Will it work, and will it be good for gaming? Also, is there anything else that I need, or anything else that you would recommend? Thank you.

My 2 big recommendations would include switching your CPU to a Core 2 Duo, and also switching your monitor to something without built in speakers. You won't likely be satisfied with their quality, so you may as well get the two separately.

Actually, I have a third idea. Go with an Asus P5 series board for an Intel chip. Those are common recommendations around here.

Welcome to PC Mech by the way!

Thank you, I edited my post to include an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and a compatible motherboard. I've also chosen a cheaper alternative to the monitor. Would these changes be a better choice for games? Also, I want to keep the price as low as possible, but still have a fairly powerful gaming PC.

C2D is more powerful than AMDs X2 line for the same price point all the way up the line, so yes, it will be better for gaming.

As for a slick gaming monitor, I usually recommend an LG Flatron. There is a 17" and a 19" on newegg that has a contrast ratio of 1400:1, making for some incredibly clear picture. Check those out.

I changed the 17" LG. Is there anything else that I should add to my computer? Such as a better power supply? And is a better sound card necessary for right now, or should I just go on-board for now? Keep in mind, I'm looking to keep this near $1,000.

I have been looking around, to see if I could make this any cheaper without much performance loss.

What about changing the "Motherboard (2) = $219.99 - Intel BOXD975XBX2KR LGA 775 Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121059" to a "$122.99 - GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128012"

It looks like a much cheaper board, with not much of a difference in performance. Input please. Thank you.

as far as monitors go I wouldn't go less than 19" - to me they kinda look like 17" CRTs, it's probably illusion, but that's how it looks to me.
Also Motherboards made by Intel usually are not overclockable, if you ever decide to do that. ASUS boards seem to be most loved here.

So you would recommend the ASUS P5W DH DELUXE/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard ($208.99) over the Intel BOXD975XBX2KR LGA 775 Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard ($219.00)?

And after that, say I just bought all of this. Would I be all set to run it? Or would I have to make any extra purchases?

I'd recommend an Asus P5B at $120.

You do not need that ultra high speed ram - DDR2-667 Corsair Value Select is all you need.

I upgraded the video card, and changed everything else with a "*" to the recommendations of others, and decided to just go get a keyboard at Best Buy or CompUSA and not waste my time ordering one off of NewEgg. Ok, SHOULD this computer run, if I were to go out and buy all of this right now?

Some good choices, but switch the hard drive to a version with 16MB of cache. My suggestion would be a Seagate 7200.10 drive, but the Western Digitals are fine too.

You need a retail boxed optical drive if you want burning and DVD playing software.

I wouldn't use the power supply in that case; Raidmax units are not great quality - and you've got a powerful video card there. Get yourself a case without a PSU, and purchase something like this separately - the PSU is not a part to cut costs on:

Changed optical drive, also added the power supply, should I get another case? That was probably the hardest to pick out for me, so can anybody recommend a case that will be good? Would THIS be a good case to get? Or can\should I just get that case and replace the power supply? Thank you.

If you like the case then get it, but you'd probably be able to save a bit of money by going for something without a PSU already installed. A case is a very personal thing - I prefer plainer cases, which might not be what you want.

That said, take a look at Thermaltake and Coolermaster cases. I can recommend both from a quality point of view.

Went with a cheaper case without a power supply. I looked at both CoolerMaster and ThermalTake and they were pretty expensive. I can always upgrade later, anyways. Changed HDD to what was recommended. This looks pretty finalized. Any other recommendations? And thank you guys so much for your input, you helped a lot.
