New build for Gaming
Hi, thanks for reading.
I have a friend that has asked me to put together a system for him, a "real screamer" so to speak. I'd like to keep everything around $1,500. I don't need to include monitor or peripherals in the cost. Just the tower and OS. Tower - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811166004 Sunbeam Transformer IC-TR-BA Black Steel $79.99 Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131045 Asus P5B Deluxe LGA 775 $176.99 Processor - Can't decide on this one yet, depends on if we get it this month or next when they have a price break. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115004 Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz 2M shared L2 Cache $221.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003 Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache $313.00 Memory - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034 CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 $234.00 Video Card - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130082 EVGA 320-P2-N811-AR GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit $289.99 Or for a bit more a card that's overclocked to bring in a little more performance. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130038 EVGA 320-P2-N815-AR GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit $319.99 Should I be thinking about the 640MB card, or maybe even the 8800 GTX? If we get the 8800 GTS then there is room to go SLi later without changing anything. Power Supply - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341002 OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W $149.99 Opticals - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827101131 SONY Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM IDE DVD-ROM $18.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827131039 SONY Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW $42.99 Windows XP - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116169 Microsoft Windows XP Home Sp2b $89.99 Floppy and card reader - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16821152005 NEC Black 1.44MB 3.5" $5.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820176825 Atech Flash Xm-4U 11-in-1 USB 2.0 $16.99 Final price $1,326.91 ~ $1,448.91 May go with onboard audio, I might recommend these speaker if he needs a set. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836121006 Logitech X-540 70 watts 5.1 $88.99 Did I miss anything? Thanks, Mark.

The P5B doesn't do SLI.
Look at the Corsair power supplies. Mitsumi and Rosewill both have combo floppy/card readers for a single 3.5" bay. Look at SATA optical drives. |

Wow, I simply thought that if a board had dual PCI-Ex16 that it MUST be SLi ready. Why else have would it have those slots? Well, with an 8800 GTS we wouldn't really need it anyway, but then we wouldn't be able to do anything with it in the future.
Maybe I'll recommend the ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 $132.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131142 I only see two Corsair Power Supplies on Newegg, didn't even know they made them. What would they have as opposed to the OCZ that I chose? CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139001 CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 620W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139002 If the floppy connects on an internal USB, can you still use it as a boot device? I didn't think USB was enabled until Windows loaded. I've had trouble before trying to install Windows with a USB keyboard. So what would we do with the other 3.5" slot? Just leave it empty I guess. The Rosewill is currently out of stock, but it seems it would cost more than buying the parts separately. MITSUMI Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal USB 2.0 digital card reader http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16821104104 Never even considered SATA opticals, but there is only one burner in stock and it's OEM. I'll need retail to get the software. All the SATA DVD-ROM's are out of stock as well. Does that mean there REALLY goodl? I noticed one had 198KB Cache and the other 256KB. That seems simply amazing since I'm used to 48x and 52x. How quickly does Newegg get their stuff back, just keep checking? I guess I could try ZipZoomFly |

I do not recommend SLI with Intel - because you have to use Nvidia chipset motherboards and they don't work quite right. The second slot on the P5B's is for an independent second card or ATI Crossfire. SLI is just a marketing gimmick anyway (just like RAID) - a single 8800 will play anything out there maxed out and the CPU will hold a pair of them back unless you get something like a E6700 or higher. When the 8800 no longer does the job, it's time for another major upgrade anyway - adding a second card isn't going to help you much.
The Corsairs are very high quality and work very well with 8800's. The combo floppy/card readers use both USB and a floppy cable. The reason I'm recommending SATA is the IDE controller issue with the 965 chipset - look at the sticky thread. This does not mean a IDE won't work - it just might give you some grief getting the OS installed. Whatever, I don't recommend Sony - they are just rebadged Lite-Ons at a higher price with lousy software. You COULD get a SATA CD or DVD drive to get the OS installed and put an IDE burner in no problem. |

The Corsair's are high end seasonic with alot of power and silence.
The FSP/OCZ 600 and 700 watters are good as far as stability goes, but they still have some issues. Just not as great. The Corsair 520w should serve you fine.

Great!! Once again, Thanks TONS!!
You really know how to answer everything without saying "just because it's better" Yet another reason why I love this place so much more than other forums. I'll the necessary adjustments to the post later after talking with my friend. |
