Problems during build

Hi everyone,

I finished building one of my three office systems, and I thought I was on a roll, until the second one began to give me some trouble.

The Problem:

When I attempted to install the heatsink fan (using the out of case technique as I've always done since my second build), the plastic fasteners would not go into the P5L-MX board, contrary to the ease I had installing all the other Intel heatsink fans. I looked at the bottom of the heatsink fans and the fasteners were somewhat spread apart (hopefully people who are familiar with the Intel heatsink fan plastic fasteners know what I'm talking about). After trying to use pliers to gently straighten them to no avail, I figured I'd use my extra Intel heatsink fan that was .04 amps weaker. I repeated the installation processor and unbelievably the same thing happened. Two Intel heatsink fans down, I don't want to try another. I think the problem lies with the motherboard holes surprisingly, but I do not know. If anyone could please lend me some advice as to how to approach this problem, possibly by adjusting the plastic fasteners, I would sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks in advance to everyone.

Is the pin in the center already pushed down through the outer pins?

No, the pin in the center is still elevated above the clear fasteners but I still cannot seem to tighten the clear plastic much at all with pliers. I think I will look at it this weekend when I have time. Thanks for the response.

Try to stick one side of the pin barely in and then wiggle it a bit and see if the whole thing goes in.

Check out the new sticky thread in the tips and tricks forum.

If the pins are hosed, you can get a new set of 4 pins for 2 bucks from Intel.

I knew it would be something silly. Two of the pins were in the locked position before I even put it in the motherboard. No wonder they weren't closing. I must say, hands up to Intel for making a heatsink fan whose fasteners cannot even be opened with the strength of pliers. Now, unfortunately, one of the pins is about 90% locked due to size. I will see the temperatures, but it is very tight still so I think I should be okay.

Just an edit: This system idles 40c, whereas the system that I was not having trouble with installing the heatsink fan is idling more around 37c. Seem reasonable? Too much of a difference to install a different fan? I think not, but we shall see.

I wouldn't worry at all about 3 degrees.

The sensors will have some degree of error between themselves anyways.
