Yet another list of items (build review)
Hello everyone. I am about to pull the trigger on a new build (my first) and was hoping you all could take a look and make sure I'm not making an idiot move with any of the selections. I am fairly computer literate and have replaced various pc components, but never put one together from scratch. I am a photographer/artist by trade and will be using this machine for rather intense Photoshop (large files with lots of filters/layers) and video editing (using Sony Vegas). My budget is $1000 without monitor or DVD burner (already have), but it would really please my better half if it came in well under that. I've looked around the postings and know you guys like the new Intels, but the AMD 5200+ seems to sit well above the E6400 in many of the charts I've seen and is very comparable pricewise. The E6600 is faster, but not by much and pushes me out of my range a little. Here's the laundry list:
Rosewill R5604-TBK 0.8mm SECC Screw-less Dual 120mm Fans ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail (2) Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM ASUS M2N-E SLI Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 500 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail CHAINTECH VGA256C-SE76GS GeForce 7600GS 256MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail XCLIO STABLEPOWER 500W ATX 500W Power Supply - Retail CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory Model VS2GBKIT667D2 - Retail AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADA5200CSBOX - Retail Already Have: DVD burner: Sony DRU-800A (will it plug into the motherboard I have selected?) Cheapo Dell 17" CRT (to be replaced when I have more money) Firewire card OS: Windows XP Home Retail Version. Will probably add Blu-Ray when they become affordable. Thanks in advance for all your help! |

That value ram is going to hold that processor back - the AM2 needs DDR2-800 to perform properly. Put that in there and recalc the price. Now - price it with a E6600 and the value ram and a baseline Asus P5B board and where do you stand? Keep in mind the E6600 will be $100 less at the end of April - and the E6300/6400 will be replaced by 4mb cache versions.

Yes, I know the Intels are going to be cheaper soon, but I've been holding out so long that I can't stand my P4 2.26Ghz anymore. I once had an 18 hour render time for a 15 minute avi clip. Sure, it had heavy effects, but that's ridiculous! So, the value ram is a problem for the AM2, but not for C2D?

Correct. The AM2 memory controller is inefficient. This will not be rectified until AM3. It doesn't make much difference with the lower end AM2 chips, but a 5200+ will definitely slow down without DDR2-800. You will lose about 12% in memory benchmarks with 667 as opposed to 800 from what I remember reading.

Just read on another post that video cards are perhaps less important than I thought with respect to video editing performance. What I need is to be able to preview effects in real time without choppiness. Could I get away with something like this or is it too cheap? I would much rather spend money on a faster processor in order to reduce render times as much as possible.

No need for cables, or mounting hardware, because all you need will be supplyed with the MB itself... The PSU is fine and will be enough for you hardware set up...As far as biostar I'm not sure on it quality, but ASUS, are highly recommended around here.. That is all I have ever used and they have great tech support if you ever need it...

I really wouldn't use a low end motherboard with a E6600. I'd get an Asus P5B.
