first build.....psu?

Hello- specs to start:

asus p5ld2 deluxe m/b
intel core 2 duo 3.1 ghz(lga 775)
1 gb ddr2 pc5300 corsair memory module
pny geforce 7600 gs ddr2 512mb graphics card
seagate barracuda 7200 300 gb hard drive
new addition:
mad dog multimedia 430w psu (model: MD-430WPS)

The problem:
Have checked connections over and over...will do again in the meantime, but with everything connected, I hit the power button, and get power to all fans (case, exhaust and CPU--even the cooling fan on the graphics card), but I get no power anywhere else- the LED light on the motherboard tells me that it IS receiving power, but it does nothing for the startup, and it appears that the hard drive or DVD drive are not receiving power at all- as the hard drive has no hum and the DVD drive will not eject.

I thought at first it was because I was using a power supply(the one packaged with the case from Thermaltake) that was not ATX 2.0 compliant. I have corrected that with the purchase of the new PSU, but still have the same problem.....someone please help.

Also----does the EZ-Plug on the motherboard need to be utilized? I cannot find any documentation on that....

Did you take the motherboard out of the case and remove EVERYTHING except the cpu&heatsink/fan, video card and ram? It doesn't sound like it from your initial post. It's a pain, but it's the only way to start working down the list of potential problems.

yes- definitely have- and i get power to the cpu fan and graphic card fan, but no BIOS- i'm working through it now tediously.....i may also be unfamiliar with all the power connections to the motherboard.....i just find it odd that both the DVD drive AND the hard drive don't appear to be getting power

side note: how do you like the soprano thermaltake case? i have the tsunami dream

The DVD drives and HDD shouldn't be connected.....but I agree that it's odd they aren't getting power. Do you have a speaker connected to the motherboard? (As in a case speaker; one that wires onto a pair of posts on the board). ? Any beeps?

Power connections: double check your motherboard manual, but I think you should have the big 24 pin connector, plus any auxilary connectors directly to the vid card. You may also need a 4 pin connector directly onto the motherboard somewhere as well.

If you're sure all the wires are hooked up, try removing the video card. Then boot it, and the motherboard should beep at you (Assuming you've got the speaker connected. connect the speaker :-) That doesn't work, remove the vid card AND ram; listen for beeping.

I like the Soprano, but it's a little flashy. First build.....got carried away......but there's tons of fans, and I've gotten used to the noise. The 90 mm fan on the clear plastic side sometimes make the side rattle like crazy; just have to tap it and it'll shut up. sort of annoying tho :-)

Also, not to rain on your parade too badly, but I would replace that Mad Dog PSU with something from a reputable manufacturer: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

Junky power supplies tend to take out other $$ components when they die, and can be just plain unreliable before then.

yeah- i know- they aren't connected while i'm doing the out-of-the-case testing....but just odd overall

and this case doesnt come equipped with a speaker...and there are no posts on the mb to plug one in, but there is a icon of a speaker- so i have a feeling that the beeps would originate there

as for connections...i have the 24 pin connector....there are no plugs for the vid card...only the open SLI connector...and i do have the 4-pin 12V connector in- but there is a covered slot next to it to allow a 8 pin....i also added before that there is a 4pin molex connector on the mb that is labeled EZ Plug- but there is nothing in the manuals to indicated exactly what it is needed for

i will try these other options you gave me though

i like the tsunami- my first build as well- so when i saw that it had blue LED lights i thought that was necessary....rather than just have it be completely functional...jeez though with the fans running, mine runs very quiet- i guess we'll see more once i get that effing hard drive spinining

I'd try replacing that PSU with something quality. If that doesn't work, there's the possibility that your motherboard isn't working.

Did the motherboard come with a small black round plastic thing with a small hole in the center and a wire connector to plug onto the speaker pins? If it did, that's the piezo speaker so you can hear the BIOS beeps. If it didn't come with one, you can pick up a normal case speaker from a computer shop for a few dollars. Are you sure the case doesn't have a speaker? If it's not on the chassis it might be on the front face plate.

You may need to plug in a 4 pin molex into the EZ Plug connection if you aren't using a 8 pin power connector. Does either power supply have a 8 pin (or two 4 pin) power connector? If they do, remove the cap off the other 4 pin connection and plug the 8 pin (or second 4 pin) power connector.

i do have the cap off of the extra 4-pin(making it an 8-pin) and still the same...i also have the molex plugged and unplugged, but with both configurations i get the same result

yeah- the case has no speaker equipped in it

i'm thinking somewhere my mb went sour...and i believe that its past warranty...so nothing but good news for this guy

Only version 2.0 P5LD2 boards are Core 2 Duo-compatible. Is yours a 2.0?
