Start up Problems
Hi I have just started to build my self a computer just to see if I can do it.
I have been following instructions on how to build a computer but no help on what to do if things don't go to plan and this is where where am. I have the power supply connected to the Motherboard plus CPU and heat sink,1 stick of Ram and video card with monitor connected to the Video Card on powering up there is one bleep and the screen shows the type of Motherboard (Asus A8v-mx) and at the bottom of the screen shows Press Del to run set up, press tab to display bios post message and it freezes there. Could you help or direct me to a thread that could help Cheers Webbie

If your hard drive doesn't have an operating system on it that's where you'll end up. Did you already go into the BIOS and set the CD-ROM as the first boot device and put the OS CD into the CD-ROM drive so you can install the OS?

Is it an IDE harddrive you're using? Or SATA?
If it's on an 80 wire IDE cable, set the jumper to Cable Select (sometimes just cs), NOT master.

Hi I have now stumbled over that problem two damaged ribon cable's that was hard to handle but happy to have found the problem.
I have loaded xp and all's fine I have purchased a four port USB card and fitted it to the M/B then reboot half way through the start up the computer switches of and then restarts nothing on the screen then nothing just the fans running. I have removed the card and the PC starts ok Any help with this would be appreciated Cheers Webbie |

What make and model? Id return the card and either try it again with the same brand, or get a new one all together.
There might also be a IRQ conflict. Are you able to get into windows with the card installed? Are you able to install the drivers for the card? If so, go to device manager, and go to the properties for the card. Check if anything is wrong with it. Last edited by FLG; 03-24-2007 at 09:28 AM. |

What's wrong with the onboard USB ports? If you need more ports, get a powered hub, not an internal card.
