fqpissed cd-dvd drives problem!

Hi, my new build

I have this problem when attempting to connect 1 cd-dvd rom drive & 1 cd-dvd burner to my pc. I have one ide port on the mobo for the drives, when i connect either one of the above drives to the furthest end of the ide cable plug power in it works fine set as master. When i plug the second drive into the power before connecting the ide cable it lights up and if i press eject it opens so i figured good its getting power ok. As soon as i then again turn off the system and plug the other part of the ide cable into this drive set as slave upon turning the pc back on all i get is a black screen with a flashing white cursor in the top left corner.

Could it be a faulty cable?
Both drives work perfect on their own.
Should i use the cable select option?

Oh also in the bios set up i have disabled the on board lan support function. With this enabled none of the above drives work whatsoever in any config, 1 connected 2 connected 1 as slave 1 as master both as cable select etc.

My Beast has the following internal organs:

Intel blkd975xbx2kr Motherboard
Intel s775 Core 2 duo E6600 ( 2.4GHZ )
Thermaltake Toughpower 600w
Nvidia Sparkle 8800GTS 320MB
Corsair performance RAM 2 X 1024GB 5-5-5-12
Western Digital Sata-300 500gig 16mb H.D.D.
Aopen cd/dvd rom drive
Samsung cd/dvd Burner
Samsung 20” lcd Monitor

Windows xp home installed fine

Thanks

You're going to need to use some third party drivers. IDE isn't native to the core 2 duo platform. Try doing a search and you'll find what you're looking for. (What you are experiencing is normal)

With an 80 wire IDE cable, you should set both drives to cable select. 80 wire cables have different colored connectors on the motherboard end, and thinner ribs.

Ok thanks guys, i will get myself one of these 80wire ide cables and i assume once connected and set to cable select the drives will work, although will this solve the problem with the on board lan support? I can enable it and both drives should be ok. It will be a pain in the arse if i have to go and get a ethernet card.

Cheers

I don't know if this will fix the LAN issue or not....try it and see, I guess. Unless you need gigabit speeds, lan cards are pretty cheap.....

Actually, the 975X chipset does support 1 IDE channel natively.

wheredidiputmybeer: If the problem isn't related to drive jumpering or the cable, it's possible the two different optical drive brands just don't like being on the same IDE channel together. Or maybe one of the optical drives doesn't like being on a 80 wire IDE cable and you need to use a 40 wire IDE cable. I ran across a Sony DVD burner that wouldn't work on a 80 wire IDE cable a few years ago.

The IDE ribbon cable that came with that motherboard is an 80 wire. Connect the correct end to the motherboard and jumper both drives CS.

The motherboard came with only a ata 66/100 cable. I need the 66/100/133 cable right? Which is the 80wire. Willl let you know what happened in a few days or so.

Cheers

80 wire IDE cables generally have 3 different color connectors: blue goes to the mobo, black on the other end is the master position, and the gray in the middle is the slave postion. And drives are jumpered to CS(cable select). 40 wire IDE cables generally have all the same color connectors and the ribs of the cable are more pronounced as compared to 80 wire.

ATA 66/100 cables are exactly the same as ATA 66/100/133 cables.
