oh the problems

Ok, so I built my pc last October and it has run relatively problem-free since (couple small probs that were diagnosed and fixed with the help of this forum). Yesterday I was going to do some electrical work in the house, so I tripped some fuses...stupid me did not turn off the pc first, so not sure if I caused any problems with a surge when the power came back on.

Anyway, today when I try and log in, it spends about 5 minutes just sitting at the memory count screen of the boot up, then finally it would boot up to windows. So in trying to troubleshoot why the boot had been slowed up so much, I tried checking all my connections, testing my RAM individually, etc.

In doing so, I apparently created a whole new set of problems.

Now, when I power on, it lights up and all fans run for less than a second, then stop for a second, then run for about 3 seconds before cycling off, and then going through the same thing over and over....just on and off over about 3 seconds. When I remove the 12v pin from the mobo, fans and lights run and do not cycle off, but when connecting the 12v pin, it does the cycle on/off. I tried another psu from my other comp and it does the same thing.

Do any of the oh-so-smart-and-helpful people here have any ideas? I'm hoping this makes sense to someone.

Here are my specs:

It could be possible your motherboard died. Check and see if there is any damage on the motherboard.

Try this troubleshooter and let us know what happens. You must take the motherboard out of the case when doing this. Don't connect the drives, you want to see what happens with just the core components assembled together out of the case.

Ok, tried the troubleshooter. With the mobo outside the case, and just one stick of RAM and the video card connected, I shorted the switch to power up and the same thing happens. Quick lights and fan, then off for a second, then on for about 3 secs...then cycle thru again.

One or more of your main components may be dead. You need to test each one in another machine to find the faulty component.

Thanks for the help all....I think (not sure how) I figured it out...I tried removing the battery off the mobo for a minute, and after that I could get it to run...then tried adding components one at a time till I found the problem...seems one of the sticks of RAM is bad...does the cycle on/off with that one in, but without it, everything boots fine...now I just need to remember how to put it all back in
