First Time Builder Problems (no video, etc)

I bought a case and motherboard so that I could build my own computer.

After putting everything together I tried to boot up. The fans all work, even the one on my video card. The LEDs on the front and the side of the case work fine.

I’m not hearing any beeps when I boot up. There is no video on my monitor. I only get a blank screen and a blinking light on the monitor, not the message I get when the cable isn’t plugged in. I tried the onboard video and my AGP card.

If I have an IDE cable plugged into the DVD drive, the drive will not do anything. However, if I unplug the IDE cable, the light on the drive will light up when I boot and I am able to open and close the drive. The same is true for my other disc drive.

Does this sound like a bad motherboard? Could it be a problem with the processor? Or some of my settings?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to PCMech... to help the experts diagnose your problem, you should post all the names, brands and specs of all the components in your system.

That case looks suspiciously cheap considering it has a 450W PSU in it. Most PSUs that come with cases are usually more worthy in the trash rather than in your PC. The maker of the PSU is also in the bad PSU list here: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

Also, a bit of additional info, try and keep clear from TigerDirect due to awful customer treatment and general unreliability. www.newegg.com is what most people living in the US use.

Having problems with a new build? Try this. You must remove the motherboard from the case when doing this. Don't connect any drives yet. Let us know what happens.

Double check and make completely sure your heatsink/fan is installed correctly on top of the processor and it is secure.

Do you have the standoffs seperating the motherboard from the case also?

The motherboard and the PSU you have are also low end ones that I would never recommend. One or both of them could be faulty. I would return them both and get a quality PSU and mobo. (Antec, FSP, or Sparkle for your new PSU and an ASUS for your motherboard).

Npt to discourage you, but for $79 you did not get a deal.. For one that PCchips MB is garbage, and might be the source of the problem.. Two never buy from Tiger Direct.. Try the out of the case build as mentioned.. If that doesn't work thena RMA the board...

I tried assembling outside of the case as suggested and I still didn't get a video.

The fan was installed securely on top of the processor.

Yes, I did have the standoffs in place.

I'm returning the mobo to TigerDirect on Monday.

Thanks for all the advice. It was a lesson learned and it didn't cost much to learn it.
