OK.... I am finally ready to build a new PC
I posted a couple months ago about building a new PC. I haven't really been keeping up with the PC world much lately so I needed some help catching up. I didn't build the PC then.
Now I am finally ready to actually build a new PC for myself. I could order it now if I wanted. I want to double check my selection of parts. If anyone has any suggestions for improvment, please share them. Looks good as well. You only need DDR2-667 if you don't plan to overclock.

Yes Cricket, as nice as it would be if it was $130, it is $230.
![]() I don't plan on overclocking. I'm getting really impatient and excited. I want to hit the "buy" button right now. I guess there are no glaring issues? Would I be able to save a few bucks by going with a different motherboard? |

Well if you don't plan to do crossfire you could cut a little off the price by going with the P5B-E. Might be worth checking both boards out side by side.

I'm in the exact same boat as you, I also feel like waiting another year to replace my P4 Northwood. But who knows, maybe by then everyone will be using quad cores? I guess we just can't win in the technology game, can we? ![]() BTW, parts look good HiHo. Good Luck with the build. |

Right now I have Logitech Z-640s. They don't even compare to my home theater system but they're OK for games. The next thing will be either building a system for my PC or simply hooking it up to the system I already have.
![]() I am going to steal the X-Fi sound card out of my current PC for the new one. That's why I included no sound card in the new build. |

Yeah, I'm using the built-in monitor speakers right now. I didn't think it would bother me, but I am really wanting some better sound quality (Dynaudio Contours in my "real" audio system.)
I was thinking about some mini monitors like Paradigm Atoms ... some "real" speakers ... but then I'd need an amp ... just thinking aloud, probably not worth it .... |

How about some Klipsch's? I bought a 2.1 set a year ago for $100 at Best Buy -- great bang for the buck. Not a pro audio speaker set by any means, but for $100 I can't complain.

I thought about those too Floppyman, but my brain has trouble getting past plastic enclosures.
Maybe I'll stop by a BB and have a look. Thanks for the rec. |

I have one more question. I ordered some Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound along with everything else. Would there be any advantage in using this instead of the thermal pad that comes with the Intel cooler or should I save it and possibly use it with an aftermarket cooler if I find the stock cooler to be too loud for my tastes?

Some people do say they shave a few degrees off the temp with arctic silver, but it's marginal. The thermal pad works for most builds and doesn't mess with the warranty. I'd hold onto it for if you do want to go to an aftermarket cooler or need to remove the CPU for whatever reason.

Does anyone have any input on the noise level of the stock Intel cooler? I like my PC to be as quiet as possbile.

I got it all together yesterday and I am typing on my new build right now. I am very happy with it. I had no problems at all. It started right up and hasn't glitched once. The final version of Vista seems very polished compared to beta 2. The first thing I did was turn off the extremely annoying UAC "feature". All the games I've tried so far have worked flawlessly.
Now, there is one very minor thing. The power LED on my case doesn't seem to work. I flipped the connector and it still doesn't work. It looks like I'll be picking up an LED to replace it. The new build is a bit noisier than my old one but I guess that's what happens when there are 7 fans in the new one versus 3 in the old one. I will have to look into quieting it down a bit though as it is quite prominent. I have one question about the SATA drives. This is the first time I've connected SATA hard drives and optical drives. I used SATA ports 1, 2, and 5. Those are all designated as master. Should I put something in 3 or 4 (slave)? |

As far as the SATA ports go, don't worry about it. Really an SATA port is an SATA port. There arn't really primary and secondary as far as use goes.
For the fans, I for one probobly wouldn't run the many to begin with. But if you do want to there are much quieter ones then come stock. Check Newegg. You can search by dB level. |

I just found an enabled Qfan in the BIOS and it made a huge difference. It is now quieter than my old one.

Amazing what some of the newer BIOS settings can do. Glad to hear you got it figured out.
