Building a computer
This will be my first time attempting to build a computer. I'd appreciate any advice/opinions etc.
Processor - Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115011 Motherboard - Asus Striker Extreme http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131074 Video Cards - 2x BFG Tech 8800GTX's in SLI http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814143093 RAM - Corsair XMS2 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145038 Power Supply - COOLMAX CTG 1,000w (Not positive, would this power supply do fine?) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817159020 Hard Drive's - 2x Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136012 Optical Drive #1 - LITE-ON CD-ROM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106065 Optical Drive #2 - LITE-ON DVD Burner http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106049 Case - XCLIO A380 (Would this case hold everything?) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811103008 I think that's it, am I missing anything? |

Are you just going to go with the on-board sound? Since you're going through the trouble and expense of doing SLi I would think you'd want better sound too. Cricket

I've heard that with the motherboard i'm getting, it won't have enough slots for a sound card if i'm getting an SLI setup, is that true? I'll be using Windows XP for now and eventually switch to Vista in a couple of months. Thanks for the help.

For your first build you sure are spending a boat load of money. I hope your build goes well. Be sure to read the motherboard manual cover to cover several times so you become familiar with it. Find and read as many "Build A Computer" tutorials you can so you become familiar with the process. Don't rush when you're building your computer. And don't build if you're tired. Be sure to learn what you need to know about static precautions. Assemble the core parts out of the case and try for POST before you install everything in the case. The core parts are the motherboard, CPU, CPU heatsink, 1 video card, 1 stick of RAM, PC case speaker (so you can hear any BIOS beeps), keyboard, power supply and monitor. Be sure to install the standoffs in the case before you mount your motherboard. Never assume anything. If you aren't sure about anything, ask about it here. Cricket

This is a hell of a machine you are building for a 1st timer........and I'm seeing price is no object....as you have a quality list of parts.
Just remember to be patient and be methodical and careful in all your steps.....will save you lots of time if you need to troubleshoot. Power Supply - COOLMAX CTG 1,000w (Not positive, would this power supply do fine?) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817159020 Whew....that is ALOT of power....This may be overkill. You could probably downgrade to 800W and put the extra money to something else with no performance hit. Also.....it may just be me....but once you get into a certain range....I prefer PSUs with Modular Cables.......saves alot of time and not to mention space in the case and makes everything just neater. Hard Drive's - 2x Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136012 I'm assuming you are going to run a RAID-0 Optical Drive #1 - LITE-ON CD-ROM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106065 Hmmm.....why do you want this?? Just with DVD-ROMs the same exact price and that they run CDs.....not sure the advantage here. The only thing I'd really recommend....if you don't already have it....is a Dual 20"+ Widescreen LCD Display setup (as you'll definitely have the power to run it....if not 4 screeens).....DELL has a great deal on the 2007WFP for 219$ this week.. Would an ENERMAX Galaxy be a good PSU?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817194019 And what do you mean by "POST"? Thanks a lot you've been a great help. |

You'll need to select an SLI certified power supply from Nvidia's list for Dual 880GTXs: http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html The Enermax you have will work fine, but you can check pricing on the others.
POST stands for Power On Self Test. Cricket is describing that you need to get the machine going outside of the case first. Procedures in detail are in a sticky thread in this forum.

This is the basic functionality and testing a computer does with the basic core components installed....if there is any problem with CPU, RAM, etc......a series of beeps will be emitted (granted your case speaker is attached) which can help you troubleshoot. You should be able to boot into BIOS. I do agree with doing the out-of-case assembly of your core components to save time and make sure you dont' have any bad eggs. Also do agree unless your board has outstanding audio already (HD Audio).....and if you can squeeze it in the case....get an X-FI Soundcard. It should only occupy 1 PCI Slot....so you should have room. Also....do yourself a big favor and get yourself a grounding strap.....even a crappy disposable one. Trying for POST with the core components out-of-the-case will help determine if all the parts are good or not. Saves you a lot of time and trouble to do this prior to final assembly. If you were to install everything in the case and then found the computer not working, you'd have a hard time trying to troubleshoot the problem like that. A standard troubleshooting procedure is to remove everything from the case and troubleshoot with the core parts assembled on a non-conductive surface (like the motherboard box). So to save yourself a lot of trouble, do the out-of-case assembly first. Cricket
