New build listing - advice please...

After reading some messages regarding some other posts I made, I have made an updated listing of the components I will be using. The only thing I have so far is the case, so I would like to see any changed that people thing I should make.

Regarding hard drives, I use 2 now, 1 for my os and programs and the other for file storage. Is that a good idea for my new system???

That looks like a good list. My suggestion is to get a larger power supply to give yourself some headroom. Antec's are good, but something around 500w would be a better fit.

You can use two hard drives if you want, but there isn't much noticable benefit. We recommend Seagate 7200.10 320GB drives. They have a long warranty and a great GB/$ ratio.

You can combine the floppy drive with a card reader. There are units that include both.

You can also bump up the RAM to DDR2-667. Its the best match for C2D systems.

First of all, what is a C2D system???

I changed the memory and also the floppy drive to a floppy drive/card reader combo. I left the 2 hard drives alone until I hear from more people regarding 2 hard drives over using 1 hard drive. I am also not sure if the video card is too much for my needs. This puter will be used for general home use, surfing the net, but also photo editing, web design, and video and music editing in the near future. I will be using Windows Vista as the os.

Here's the new list...

C2D = Core 2 Duo.

The 7900GS is a little overkill if you aren't doing any gaming, but it is at a very nice price point right now. If you want to trim the budget, the 7600GS would be a good fit.

When it comes to video cards, what should I look for to suit my needs? I never bought one and know very little about them.

The major deciding factors are use (gaming or no gaming) and budget. Since you're not gaming, you don't need a very expensive card. And the rough rule of thumb is that the more expensive the card is, the more powerful it is. Right now, the best bang for the buck are the 7600/7900 cards. The 7600 will be plenty for a non-gaming system, but if you want to have a bit more headroom for later, the 7900 is a good choice. The price difference is small.

Gaming is not something I will really do, but you never know what the future holds!!! I'll check them out and make a decision. Is the brand I chose OK, as I do not know a good one from a bad one.

Yes, that is a good brand. eVGA has a reputation for good quality and customer service, we recommend them all the time.

OH, and I thought of a buying a TV Tuner card. Can someone tell me if the components I chose will work for one of those? If I change to a 7600 video card, will I still be OK???

TV Tuners are separate cards from your video card. Video cards go in the PCI-Express slot, while TV Tuner cards are plain ol' PCI. You can pop them into any system really.

Hauppauge is a popular Tuner brand.

OK, I found these 2 video cards that are not as beefy as the first I chose. The only difference with these is the memory. Is the $20 price difference worth it for more memory???

Depends on what you're going to do with the computer. If you're going to be gaming, then get the 512MB model. Otherwise the 256MB model is okay for most other things.

Great, I'll take that into consideration. I would still like opinions about having 1 hard drive instead of 2. Right now I use 1 for programs and 1 for storage.

I prefer two drives... one for the OS and programs and another for simply storage.

But one HDD is fine too... you still can create two partitions... one small one for the OS and programs and a larger partition for storage.

But again... this is just personal preference.

If you have 1 HDD and 2 partitions, can you reformat 1 partition and not the other??? Is there a specific brand that stands out from the others? I have only used Western Digital.

Yes you can reformat just one partition and not the other.

WD and Seagate are both good.

hello spydaman just a thought i;ve just put together a system and put in a xfx gt7600 as i thought with direct x10 just coming in it would be a bit silly to spend to much yet on a directx 9 card, just a thought as more dx 10 cards come out you can always upgrade later.

How big of a deal is this if I will not be using my ststem for games??? If I get DX10, I assume it will work with the older versions as well.

If your system will not rely heavily on the video card (gaming, video editing, etc)... I personally wouldn't worry too much about it.

I will not be using it for gaming, but for general use, web design, photo editing, and maybe some music and video editing in the future.

I thought of getting a TV/Tuner card, so maybe I should get DX 10.

You dont really need too much power for such low end cards, especially since gaming isnt a priority.

I would replace that particular antec (smartpower2.0) with something like this:
-Enhance 400w
-Xclio StablePower 500w
-AMS Mercury 460w

The CWT built antecs (TruePower2 and Smartpower) aren't as reliable as some other choices out there for the price. They have a tendency to barbecue themselves under high loads or heat. All around higher failure rates in the past year.

FSP is another better brand too.

I was told by a few others to choose Antec due to their quality. I will take a look at the others you mentioned. How does Antec rate overall with the others you mentioned???

Its not a junk psu dont get me wrong, and this does not apply to ALL Antec models.. The only ones that are not so hot are the CWT built ones, such as the Trupower2 and Smartpower. The other models such as the Trio and Earthwatts are fantastic powersupplies.

Most stay away from those particular models nowadays. Much higher failure rates over the past year or so.

If I had to rank them from quality, The Enhance would be first, then the AMS and Xclio. None of them would dissapoint you. Just sayin, if your spending money, mind as well get as high of quality as you can.

Don't think I'm trying to 2nd guess your opinion. I am new to building a computer, so I am asking TONS of questions. Can I ask where you got your info on failure rates, as I would like to look over the info if possible!!!

Thanks to EVERYONE for the help I am receiving...

There are two reasons why the Channel Well Tech (CWT) antecs failed. Poor quality Capacitors and high heat buildup. Fuhjyuu caps, (the ones used in these), are already notorious for failure over a certain length of time wherever they are used. Not just in PC power suppply and components. Alot of psu manufacturers use these caps to no problems, this is due to quality control, which is something CWT has been lacking more recently.

They also hate heat. The Antec Smartpower and Truepower line utilise very low speed fans. This is not a problem if the powersupply is efficient and has quality components. Good example would be FSP; they've been using these caps without issue for a while now.

However they were doing great until more recently, probably because of much better quality control and the fact that components used a lot less power.

If you check out www.badcaps.net you can read all about this. Theres a warning stickied on their forums.

Most of the stuff about failures I see in various forums, but you can do a google search for Antec+Fuhjyuu, or Antec+dead and you will see some results.

Remember, Antec's other models are GREAT. Just be cautious of these when using high end components. With low end setups these CWT antecs are also great. Don't get me wrong, im not bashing antec or calling it junk.
