Make sure he has plenty of memory installed and a fast broadband connection. 256Mb of ram in that P3 machine is most likely the bottleneck. If you choose to go with Vista on the new machine, I'd recommend 2Gb of ram in a Dual Channel configuration. Keep in mind that a pc connected via a wired connection is slightly faster than a wireless connection. Add WEP or WAP encryption to the mix and wireless slows a tad more.

If you're just looking to upgrade the box he has now, you'll see a huge improvement if you increase the amount of RAM.

More memory like the others have said will help.

Go to Crucial.com and use their memory configurator to help you find what kind of memory the machine will take.

If the system is using onboard video... an upgrade to a standalone video card will make a difference also.

In general, yes a video card would help. In this case though, I think it's just a ram problem:

I don't think online poker is very video intensive, but multiple games slowing down the computer says memory to me :-)

Well a standalone video card will free up any system memory that the onboard video would be using.
