New Build $1,000 – Take a look
I am building this computer to get away from my POS dell laptop. The computer will be a non-gamer pc. Mostly used for internet, watching and recording TV shows (so I can download them into my hand-held palm tx). Also ripping DVDs to my palm.
I have left some room to upgrade. This is not my first build, but the last one was 7 years ago and I didn’t pick the components. Comments are welcome! Case is a Rosewill R604-P SL 120mm http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811147059 39.99 PSU is a Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-400 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817103935 54.99 Motherboard is a ASUS P5B-VM LGA 775 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131043 114.99 CPU is a Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115016 189.00 Memory is CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145098 99.99 Hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250820AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148142 67.99 Optical drive LITE-ON Combo Drive Black SATA Model SHC-52S7K-05 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106040 25.99 Card reader Atech Flash Xm-4U 11-in-1 USB 2.0 Black & Silver Internal card reader http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820176825 19.99 TV card is a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16815116620 67.99 OS in Windows xp 89.99 Monitor A nice LCD for 150ish 15 or 16inch. Arctic Silver Ceramique Thermal Compound 5.00 Keyboard, mouse, speakers. On this one I might pick a set up at walmart. If I remember right it was wireless for around 30. I need some input on a inlet case fan(120) and a cpu fan. (no lights) I am not looking at OC’ing at this time. 1,000 is my budget. Thanks for looking! Navy_sparky |

The CPU you have listed is a retail unit, which means it comes with a heatsink/fan and thermal compound. You don't need the Arctic Silver or the additional fan you have listed. Using anything but the Intel fan will void the 3 year warranty on the processor.
Also, you would probably want Arctic Silver 5, not the Ceramique stuff; the ceramique can't be removed! I'm very happy with the Acer monitor I purchased a month ago....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009103

The Ceramique is actually very removable, you might be thinking of the Alumina adhesive version . A little safer then AS5 if anything; its not capacitative or conductive. The AS5 will perform better though.
If you don't have any real plans to add a videocard, why not buy a PSU and Case Combo? Such as this: Foxconn TS-1 w/300w

Guys I know who do some serious DVR'ing with PCs have terabytes of storage. You might not need to go there, but I'd sure look at more than 250 .... |

250gb should be enough if he doesn't plan of storing the recordings for long term.
But XenaWP your right... it would be better to go a bit larger. You can spend 10 dollars more and go with the 320gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140 |

LeftyAce: Thanks for th input! I didn't know it will void the warranty to use another fan. The Acer monitor looks good!

Yes, it is. Its a FSP 300w. One of the few cases besides Antec's that do come with reasonably decent powersupplies.
Your original combo is not bad either, just trying to save ya a little $. |

Hey ya’ll I just noticed that the motherboard above is not Quad-core ready! My question is should I buy the motherboard below that is? Can’t seem to pull anything from Asus website about this MB. Only $18 difference! hmmmm
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131085 Besides ebay, does anybody know where to get ‘windows’ and ‘Intel’ badges for the computer case? Thanks for the help Navy Sparky |

The original motherboard you picked out is Quad-core ready. I think Newegg forgot to add that fact.
It says so here at ASUS.com: http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?m...3&l2=11&l3=332 |

Yeah... it is loading slow for me too.
At least their website works... some of the other motherboard manufacturer's website are either really slow or not working sometimes. |

On the stickers: my AMD processor came with one, so the Intel you're getting might also.

I was wondering about WinXP myself. Directron has some, but they don't look exactly like the real ones (to me). |
