CPU question

Hi Gang

I have an easy one for a change, and a lollypop to the first good answer.

Say you are going to buy a CPU, what is the difference between a 1.4GHz, and a 2.0GHz CPU. Same brand.

Better, faster, what.?????

Thanks.........Gunny

If they are the same type of processor, such as both are single cores, or both are duallies, then yes it would be better and faster. The variables come into play when they are in a different line of processor family and then you have to take into account other considerations.

The GHz rating tells you how many "clock cycles" the processor can complete per second. (Actually, with GHz, it's how many billion clock cycles it can complete....)
If you have two processors of the same type (two Pentium 4s, for example) the one with more cycles per second will get more work done per second. Some processors can do more per clock cycle than others, so pure cycles-per-second isn't a good comparison between different CPU types.

Hi LeftyAce & TwoRails

Thanks for the good answers, I appreciate it. You two will have to split one lollypop. It is just simple things like this that we take for granted that we know, but really we don't. I assumed it was some thing like this, but not sure. So the best place to ask and get good answers, is here. I appreciate all of you not treating dummies like me, like we don't deserve an answer. What is simple to some may not be to others.

Thanks and take care......Gunny

No problem....half a cyber lollypop is plenty :-)

Questions are always a good thing; that's how I learned this stuff in the first place!
