No Power!
I recently purchased a new mobo, amd athlon 3800+ 64 X2, 600 watt psu, new video card,HDD, and the correct RAM to go with it. After finding that my mobo doesnt fit in the case, I decided to assemble it on top of the case itself just so I could get the HDD formatted and make sure everything worked. After installing everything and double checking ALL connections thoroughly, I ran into my setup seemingly not getting any power. I conected the power button to my new board and it is either constantly illuminated, or goes on and then immidiately shuts off after turnign the psu on. I have tested with my old psu and I get the same result: Its as if I have no power. Nothing turns on, and I know it is receiving power because I saw the CPU fan do a revolution or two. I am baffled as to what it could be. Everything is plugged in correctly and tightly, not grounded, but it does not even power up. Can somebody help me. This is my first complete build and my $400 investment has left me emptyhanded.

Don't assemble it on top of the case... the case may be shorting out the motherboard.
You should do the assembling outside of the case on top of a non-conductive surface like cardboard or a wooden table. When you install it inside of the case... you need to make sure there are standoffs between the case and motherboard also. What is the brand and model of the PSU? |

I think it is infinity or something like that. It wasnt cheap if thats what youre getting to. I managed to get it to power on by using the jumping technique. The wiring on my old power on switch only had a few wires actually in it out of the 20 slots. I managed to locate the power jumper and it has been working beautifully since. My only problem now is loading windows onto the hdd. I want to thank you for making an attempt to help me good sir.

If the PSU is the Ultra X-Finity lineup... I would not recommend using it.
But its your computer so its your choice. I don't want to offend you in any way. So... does the computer POST fine? To install the OS... all you need to do is go into the BIOS setup and make the CD drive the first boot device... save your settings... then pop in the OS cd... boot from it and install the OS. You may also want to hit F6 during the setup and install the SATA drivers if there are any included with your HDD and your HDD is in fact a SATA drive. |
