Problem with new build!

I just put together my new build. Everything was going well, all components were recognized in the BIOS and everything was set to defaults. So, I started to install my operating system. Here is where the problem started.

During install, about 3 minutes in, I accidently unplugged the HDD LED power from the motherboard. I plugged it back in, but the OS install was stuck on "37 minutes remaining for install." So, I restarted. Everything booted up normal, I got the XP logo screen, then a screen that says "setup is being restarted..." The first time, it went back to the installation screen, but the time remaining never left "39 minutes." So I restarted again.

Now, the computer keeps resetting every time it leaves the "Setup is being restarted..." screen. I have entered BIOS and everything there seems normal. WHAT should I do????

You said that everything in the BIOS setup was set to default. Have you tried going back into the BIOS setup and make the CD drive the FIRST boot device. Do that and see if you can restart the installation process from the start again.

Also double check and make sure nothing else was knocked loose.

I checked that and disabled my Legacy diskette (was set on 1.44 3.5"), which I do not have, and set my CD-ROM to 1st in the Boot Priority list. Still having the same problem.

The CD-ROM spins the disc for a few seconds after the XP Logo screen, the Processor LED lights up for a second, then dims, then the screen goes black for a couple seconds, it beeps, and restarts (or restarts then beeps, can't tell which is first because the screen is black).

Is there a way to completely wipe the hard drive and start the OS installation from scratch? I don't have ready access to another desktop computer, but I do have a Dell laptop...

Download the Ultimate Boot Cd from here: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

They have some utilities that will allow you to "Zero" or format the HDD. Do it and start the OS installation all over again.

Yup. It's not fun, but it should fix the problem.

Next time, keep yer hands outta the box until WinXP finishes installing

Yep... it is always a good idea to keep your hands out of the case whenever the computer is powered on.

OK. I DL'ed the program and burned it to a disc. However, the same problem keeps happening. It seems like for some reason the system refuses to boot from a CD-ROM, even though it is listed at the top of my Boot Priority list. I removed my HDD from the list and it refused to try to boot at all. So I changed my CD-ROM priority list to my other CD-ROM and use it as my first boot priority. No luck, same problem keeps happening.

Is there some reason why my motherboard would recognize my CD-ROMs but refuse to boot from them?

Edit: I redid the boot priority list to leave off the HDD again and it still cycled back through like before.

It may be possible that the incomplete installation of the OS has something to do with it.

All I can think of now is to pull the hdd and hook it up to your laptop via the USB port and format it using the OS on the laptop.

You need something like this to hook the HDD to the laptop... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812232002

Anybody know of a nationwide store that will sell that adapter? I would really like to pick it up tomorrow and get this resolved.

You might try BestBuy, but I doubt they have it.. They didn't even have a 4x4 adapter I need for my pc.. Best is just buy from newegg.. it will be cheaper in the long run even with shipping..

If you cannot find that adapter. You could get a external hard drive enclosure instead. I believe those are more widely available.

I think most computer specialty stores should have a few.

CompUSA has some in store for pickup: http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...ode%20matchall

What are the specs for this computer? Please post a list of all the components by brand and model including the power supply.

Did you burn the CD as an ISO image? I believe when I DL'd the UBCD, it was an ISO image ... I don't think you can just copy that to a CD.

Ok, I fixed the problem with installing my OS. All I had to do was buy a new HDD, install the OS onto the new (slower) HDD, format my other HDD, then install the OS onto that HDD. Sound like fun? Indeed, it was.

But, now I am having a new problem. 1st, my display looks like crap. There are some color issues and I am getting a strange pattern in random parts of my screen. So I tried to install the drivers that came with my video card. Shortly after starting the installation, the computer shutdown and restarted. When it came back on, I was forced to start with my last safe configuration. So I went to the manufacturer's website and downloaded the latest driver from there. Same thing happened. Any Ideas?????

Specs:
Asus P5B-E Motherboard
Seagate 320GB SATA HDD
Western Digital 160GB SATA HDD
EVGA 7600 GT GPU
Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe
ASUS SATA DVD-Rom
Lite-On SATA DVD Burner
FSP Group 700W PSU
Windows XP OS

Could be a registry issue. I hate to suggest another reinstall of XP, so possibly try cleaning out the registry with a registry cleaning tool like CCleaner (free). Some others out there for sale, or maybe a free trial. Also, try getting the video card to work in another computer if you can. Then try uninstalling all the video card drivers, pull out your card, and try it all again.

Is this your PSU? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104023

I've looked around, and found that a 7600GT needs 18A on the 12v Rail. This PSU only gives 15A from what I see.

This is the PSU:

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817104015

Also, part of the problem is I can't install the video card drivers, the computer keeps restarting halfway through the process and I have to restart withe my "last good configuration"

Yup, that PSU gives 15A on the +12V rail. This could very well be the problem.

So, do I have to buy a new PSU? What do you suggest?

Is anything overclocked, or do you plan on overclocking? Oh, and what kind of RAM do you have? Try reseating the RAM and double (triple?) checking connections again before spending any more money.

This was recommended to me by Alaron and minsonngo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954
It's the cheapest good quality PSU that fits your needs. $57.

Edit: the 500W version has free shipping, which may actually be cheaper, or close to the 450W version.

I'm not vastly experienced here, but one reason I chose PC Power & Cooling is 48 Amps on the 12V rail.

If you bought that FSP 700w, then it's certainly not inadequate. It has FOUR +12v rails at 15A each, at least two of which will have probably been dedicated to your video card.

What video card did you purchase? I see in your last parts list, you were choosing between two.

Every time I try to install the drivers, my PC shuts down and reboots in the middle of the process, then I have to restart with the "last good configuration" or it won't restart windows. This has happened whether booting from the CD or the newest driver downloaded from the EVGA website...

I reseated the RAM, checked everything in BIOs and everything is showing up. I am still having the same problem.

Should I order a new PSU?

I bought the 7600 GT card. Is there a chance that I am missing something as far as connections from my PSU to my MB?

The 7600GT doesn't require a dedicated power connector, so that rules out this particular problem.

As far as connections to the motherboard go, you should have connected both the main 24-pin power connector, and the auxiliary 4-pin CPU power connector.

I think you may have a defective video card on your hands.

My PSU is connected to the MB in the correct manner (thanks, by the way, that was a big worry of mine!!). I think Cricket may be right, I think my video card may be defective. Unfortunate, to say the least, but an easy fix. Thanks everyone for your help and I will post again as soon as I can get a new card!

On Cricket's advice, I RMA'd my video card and ordered another. I installed it about 3 minutes ago, updated the drivers and....IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!!!! The display looks great and I had no problems with the driver installation. Great diagnosis Cricket!!!!! Thanks to everyone who helped out with my build, it has been a great experience overall and would not have been nearly as enjoyable without all of your help!
