What could be wrong

I am having a big problem. When I turn the power on my computer it flashes the lights and the fans try to start and nothing. What could be the cause? It is getting power I have replaced the power supply. The old one tests to be good it runs all the other computer I have. Any ideas?

What are your system specs? Brand and model please.

Do you have the CPU heatsink and fan installed properly and locked in securely?

Check and make sure you don't have anything shorting out your motherboard. Do you have the standoffs mounted between your case and motherboard?

Try the outside of the case build... it helps in troubleshooting your problems.

Having problems with a new build? Try this.

We need to know the specs of this computer in order to help you. Please post them by brand and model including the power supply.

Since you tried another power supply (a compatible one, right?) and the problem still exists there's a chance you have a bad motherboard. But tell us the specs of the system so we can see if there are any suspect parts.

mobo: ECS PF88 Extreme Hybrid (1.1) LGA SiS656
CPU Intel Pentium D 805 775 2.66G
Cpu Fan Gigabyte GH-PCU23-RTL
Logisys Computer PS575XBK ATX12V 575WPower Supply

Standoffs are on. The computer was running and I was loading some programs which told me to restart computer so I I warm booted and that was when the problem started.
Thanks

ECS boards and Logisys psus are generally NOT recommended.

One of my very first builds a long time ago... I made the mistake of using an ECS board... had the same issue as yours... turns out the ECS board was DOA (dead on arrival)... this happens a lot of times with ECS boards.

I am just trying to learn it does have to work but it doesn't have to be great. I don't have much money to just be learning with. I have two teenagers to get through school yet. But any help will be helpful since everything seems to be going wrong at once. Thanks again

Does the motherboard look okay? Are the capacitors bulging or leaking?

Is this a new build or one that has been working for a while?

I suspect the PSU or motherboard issue. Only way to tell is to test the parts in a working machine or swap in known working parts.

I use to live in TX but I am now in the middle of MN . Everything is planed around fishing. But it does sound like maybe I need a different Power supply if it will not keep working with the mobo.

Have you tried reseating and reconnecting everything?

If that does not work... I would look into replacing the PSU first. If that does not go... the motherboard would be next.

Just to confirm... the computer is not even turning on at all right? The fans are not spinning... etc.

The lights flash and the fans start spining but then it all stops . Just a flash. I reseated everything pushed on all cords I did have hooked up. nothing seemed to do the trick.

I would try the PSU in another machine... if it works. Then it is still good.

I would replace the ECS board.

I am back On thing I did forget. When the power goes off to fans and lights the power supply makes a ticking sound.Sounds like a fast clock low ticking noise both power supplies did this.

Sounds like the power supply is bad.

But you might want to try this. Turn off all the lights so you're in the dark and then try to power up the computer and watch for flashing in sync with the ticking. If you notice a bluish light flashing in time with the ticking, see if you can find where it's coming from. That will tell you which part is bad. The ticking and the flashing is electrical arcing...maybe a solder joint broke.

hey your right so I ordered an CoolMax CUG-700W Rt I sure do hope this does the trick now I just have to wait for three days. Is there any way with out a power supply to see if the mobo is still good?
The blue flash of light was from the power supply. Kinda pretty but it doesn't help it run.

Nope. You need a PSU to find out.

For future reference... try to pick a PSU from the "Good" list here:

It will be better for you in the long run performance wise and financially.

I found something I think will do better than what I started with either a XCLIO Greatpower X14S4P 7oo W ATX 12V 700 W or OCX Gamexstream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX 12v 700 W powersupply both sound good don't know which is better. Alsois there a list of good MOBO to compare just like the power supplies?

Cooler master is on the good list :-) But I believe 700 watts is WAY overkill. What video card do you have?

OCZ and xClio are both good, but again, you're probably spending way too much on 700Watts.

If that's not an issue, go ahead and test it out!

As far as motherboards, ASUS is the favorite on these forums for reliability and ease of use.

As LeftyAce already stated... 700 watts may be overkill for your system.

For the majority of systems... 450 to 500 watts would be a good bet.

Something like this is great:
