I'm putting together a C2D E6600 with an ASUS P5B Deluxe. How in the world do I get that stock heatsink to attach to the motherboard?! I put in one corner and the other pops out. I'm really worried about the pressure I'm pushing onto this board to attempt this. I know I've seen this subject before but can not seem to find any reference to it by searching. I've tried Googleing. I'm now stuck at nearly the first step in this build.
Any help or suggestions much appreciated! |

You can't put too much pressure on the board. It is frightening how hard you've gotta push (mine bent a good deal) but the board won't crack.
Just to double check, you are doing this with the motherboard out of the case, right? It's easiest if you can put one hand on each side of the board (front and back).

Also don't make the same mistake I did. Make sure the indicator slots at the top of each post are in the correct positiion. It's amazing how hard you can push down and not have it click if it is the detatch position.

Thanks to all the replies! I'm still not sure what I was doing wrong. I had originally been trying to snap it in with the board out of the case. It never did work that way. Finally I got fed up and put the board in the case. The cooler finally snapped down after that. It still does seems like something that could easily pop loose. I can grab the cooler and give it a pretty good shake with movement but can't figure out why all of a sudden it worked when it didn't for so long before. Oh well! I'm gonna keep an eye on it pretty close till I feel safe with it. I can't for the life of me figure out why someone would build such an expensive and advanced CPU and then make what should be a simple task so damn difficult.
Anywho, thanks everybody. By the way, it booted up fine and temp was stable around 65 degrees. |

I hate to tell you, but 65 degrees indicates that the heatsink is not making proper contact with your CPU. Core 2 Duos run much cooler then that, especially at idle.

65 Celcius? If so, that's too hot. Download CoreTemp to get an accurate temperature reading, and if it's still that high, you still need to get the heatsink figured out.

What temp am I looking for as acceptable? This was after just installing the OS. Would that have caused it to be hotter than normal. I'm a couple hours away from home now and not able to check anything out till I get back. (It's turned off by the way)
I had just enough time to install the OS before I had to get some sleep for work this weekend. I'll post back later with some more detail. |

At idle the C2D should be around 20 celcius. Under intense load, it might hit 40. If it at any time gets near 60, you've got something wrong with the cooling.
The chip will shut down to prevent damage at 85, but you never want to get that far :-) |

LMAO 20? More like 30 I bet he was using PC Probe or something like that.
Use TAT, and CoreTemp to get individual core readings, those are what you want to apy attention too. Also 65C seems hot, my E6600 under 100% load with stock cooling ran to 45C. |

OK, here's an update. The temp I was reporting was from BIOS. I booted up and temp started off in mid 50's and gradually over 10 to 15 minutes made it up to low 60's. I booted into the OS and installed Coretemp within a minute or two of viewing the BIOS temp as low 60's. Coretemp has held steady for a half hour or so between 34 and 38 degrees.
LeftyAce, you said it should be 20. Is that with stock cooling? That's just under room temp and seems quite low to me. Quick question: What do you suggest as a load test in this situation. I looked into Prime95 and that seemed time a little too time consuming. Any simple small programs to put a load on the CPU? Thanks Last edited by Adams551; 05-12-2007 at 08:34 PM. |

34 to 38 is fine....the case I'm dealing with has a 25CM fan on the side.....thus the lower temps.
You don't have to run prime95 forever....just run it for a couple of minutes, it'll be putting the processor under maximum load the whole time. Monitor the temps as this happens. They should level out below 60 degrees. The ASUS boards have an error in the temperatures reported in the BIOS. The board averages 3 numbers; the temps on each core plus a third number perpetually set to 85 C...it's the processor telling you where it will shut down to prevent damage, but ASUS averages it in, thus pulling the total temp higher. I'd trust core temp. |

Now I'm in trouble it appears. I'm actually on the new build now and it's running at around 40 degrees as I type. I ran Prime95 and within 30 seconds It was within a couple degrees of 80. I shut down the program and it dropped back to 40 fairly quick. I'm using Coretemp, all fans are working. I'm thinking of removing the cooler, cleaning off the stock thermal grease and reapplying new grease. Is this a reasonable course of action. While attempting to apply that cooler I rotated it once or twice. Would this have smeared the stock grease in an awkward way? This thing has went together great except for this heat situation.
Also, if new grease is the answer. Where can that be found without ordering online? Best Buy, Circuit City? Thanks again and sorry for going on about this. This is my first build and don't want it to be crippled out of the gate. I appreciate all those who have posted. |

First, I'd go out and get a tube of Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste. You should be able to get it at Circuit City or Best Buy (My local Compusa stocks it).
*EDIT* So it turns on now? Good. I'd take everything out of the case again (sorry :-) and re-do the heatsink. You'll want to remove the heatsink, clean off the thermal paste, and apply a small amount (A drop the size of a BB in the center of the processor) of arctic silver (Instructions here: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm) Last edited by LeftyAce; 05-13-2007 at 09:20 AM. |

FYI: removing the factor preapplied thermal compound with void the warranty on the CPU.
So don't do it unless you have to. |

True, but I'd say 8o degrees qualifies as "have to" unfortunately. Re-using the pre-applied paste multiple times can lead to tiny air pockets that impede heat transfer.

*Update*
Thanks to all and especially LeftyAce I now have a E6600 idling at 30C. I went to Radio Shack and bought the Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound and applied as per directions given. Honestly I wasn't expecting a real difference. (AS5 = miracle stuff). My idle temp went from 37-42 down to a steady 29-30. I've been using Intel TAT and also running Prime95 with simultaneous SuperPi to get CPU usage to 100%. Before it would steadily rise until I would shut it down at 80 (I suspect it would have kept right on going). Now it never gets past 62. That may not be great but it will work fine for me! Still don't know what was wrong. Must have just been a bad connection with the stock grease. Oh well, it's looking good now! Thanks again! |

Cool! Glad it's working.
*EDIT* Argh. No pun intended there :-) |
