To OEM or not OEM???
Could someone tell me when a retail version of a component SHOULD be bought as opposed to getting an OEM version. With OEM I am afraid I would not be getting something I would need.
Also, how are warrantees (sp?) handled with OEM versions??? |

Processor-Retail unless you need overclock
Ram-OEM is fine Optical/Hard Drive-OEM most definitely Motherboard-Retail always. Printed manual is crucial Case-Retail always. Again, included accessories are a need OS-Depends. Some people like boxed software. I used to be like that, but it's an expensive ocd. |

it will actually boil down to your own research at the time of purchase on which one should be bought or not. You can often find a retail package on sale for less than OEM, but not always, naturally. Warrantees can very differently also sometimes OEM is more and sometimes it is less than retail so you need to verify that for the item your purchasing. In general I buy OEM as I don't need extra goodies that come in retail packages in most cases. That is true for stuff like hard drives and the like. Most of my sound cards, for a different example, I usually buy retail for the extra goodies and I buy them on sale when they are cheaper than OEM.

CPU - Retail (comes with stock heatsink)
Motherboard - Retail RAM - Retail Video Card - Retail Power Supply - Retail Hard Drive - OEM Optical Drive - Retail Operating System - OEM Case - Retail Retail - Full warranty with the manufacturer. OEM - Very short warranty with the seller (usually 15 to 60 days) but hard drives usually get full warranty with manufacturer. Cricket

The optical drive though is debateable. If you need Windows burning software then Retail. If you''re using Linux or have an existing copy of Nero or Roxio for the build then OEM optical drives are fine. As TwoRails said, it comes down to researching before you buy and knowing what you are looking at rather then just going by generic advice.

If you overclock your CPU, you may want to go OEM since you'll probably be buying a different heatsink anyways.
