computer shuts down after about 5-10 minuts
The new computer I built shuts down after about 5-10 minutes when using WMP or browsing sights that use flash video. I haven't done much else for long periods of time yet, so I don't know if it happens when doing other things. If it is just running with windows explorer or control panel open it does not shut down. Any help is appreciated.

The Demon PSU you have is made by Powmax. That brand is not a very good one.
I would swap it out for a Antec, Corsair, Enermax, Enlight, Fortron Source, OCZ, Seasonic or Sparkle. What are your system temperatures? Also try leaving only one stick of memory installed at a time to see if the issue goes away. Kingston memory are not as good as they used to be. You can also download memtest from memtest.org and test your memory one at a time. Last edited by minsonngo; 05-13-2007 at 12:21 PM. |

You may not have the LGA775 heatsink installed properly. If very hard to install correctly if you already had the motherboard mounted in the case. It's best to install the LGA775 heatsink with the motherboard out of the case. LGA775 heatsink installation tutorial.

If I open windows media player and just keep it open without playing music, the computer does not shut down, but when it is playing music it does shut down after 3-5 songs. I also browsed the internet, watching video for about an hour using Internet Explorer and had no shutdown problem. Do you still think it could be the memory, power supply or heat sink based on this?

I have not had a chance yet, but before I swap out the power supply or buy new memory, I want to make sure they are the problem. I am going to try removing one stick of memory today. Thanks for your help.

I agree with Cricket's diagnosis. Your heatsink must be installed correctly, or else the processor will overheat and shut down.

I took out the mother board and reinstalled the heat sink according to the link provided above. I don't think it was installed completely before. I thought that solved the problem, but it did not. I have put each stick of ram in separately and swapped positions and still have the problem. How do I measure the temperature? What else should I try short of buying new ram or psu?

Programs like Coretemp,, Motherboard Monitor (MBM), Speedfan, and SensorView (Trial for 30 days) can be used to monitor your system temps.

I would probably suspect the power supply... bad ram would not cause your computer to SHUT DOWN.
But monitor your temperatures also... use Coretemp as kmillerusaf suggested. http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/ |

Is the computer shutting down or is it restarting?
Do you have the Automatically Restart option disabled in System Properties> System Recovery? In Device Manager do you have any yellow exclamation marks on any device? Cricket

There is an exclamation mark on "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" I have installed the nvidia driver from the CD. Am I missing something?

The highest temp was 71 degrees C. It usually stayed around 60-65 degrees.

hello,
you say that you have installed video drivers correctly but after that is still has exclamation on 'devices'?, try to reinstall video drivers again.. if still in exclamation, try downloading their latest drivers. Else, try reinsert your video or you might try another video card w/c 100% working. hope this helps wbr, |
