Optical Drive

Im still building my first build. I've gotten to the part about intalling the opticall drive. I bought an OEM drive so it doesn't have the cable for the audio. It's a SATA optical drive I've got the SATA power and Data cables hooked up fine but i don't have cable for audio. Where could I buy one and do i need one. Also it is a SATA optical drive so should I plug it into one of the SATA plugs on the board by the hard drive or is there a different place for SATA optical drives. Thanks for your help. Sorry for all the posts.

The 2 SATA opticals I just put in my new build didn't even have a place to plug in an audio cable. Just the power and SATA connections.

I've installed a few optical drives, but don't thing I ever had one with an audio cable. I'm sure one of the experts will be along soon, but I don't think there will be an audio cable.

Someone correct me if I am wrong...

There is no longer a need for a dedicated cable for audio. Audio is transferred down the SATA cable along with data.

Was there an audio cable with the older cable types (the thin flat ones)???

Yes there was. Back in the day, Audio cables were necessary to carry sound from optical drives because the drives were not able to use the ATA cable to carry the sound. Newer drives were able to use it, so audio cables were unnecessary. Now that SATA is around, it does the same thing, and many drive manufacturers have stopped including audio cables and/or connections.

It has been quite some time since I installed an optical drive, so I really do not remember the audio cable. Actually, I have an optical drive here on my desk, and if I look on the back, there are pins for audio.

(I really need to learn more about computer hardware, and EVERYONE on here is helping with that!!!)
