Case, Mobo and possible PSU problems.

Above is my new purchase from Newegg, I am having serious problems connecting all the wires to the case. After connecting all, nothing powers up. In addition, do I need to connect an additional cable to power up the SATA harddrive and LITE DVDRW, there is a data cable, which i have connected. Also there are some cable LED, PS-1 and a bunch of other 1 and 2 pins that I could not find where they connect to. Frankly speaking I am thinking of changing the case, what do you recommend for the mobo I have listed above. I will surely appreciate all the help you can give. I have reviewed all the manuals I can find online for both the case and the mobo, and none really helps in terms of addressing this issue I am having. I think my issue will primarily be the case, but there is no way to test it. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

The power supply included with the case is a Turbo Link which is not a good one at all.

The power supply also does not have SATA power connectors. You will need a PSU with this available to power your HDD and DVD burner.

Go with a ATX 2.x (x being any number) PSU. Make sure you get one with about 450 to 500 watts of power. Also check and make sure it has at least TWO SATA power connectors.

And the cables coming from the case such as the power button... reset button... power led... and hdd led will need to be connected to the appropriate set of pins on the motherboard. Consult your motherboard manual for the correct arrangement.

Can someone please recommend a good case for me please, also I am looking for a simplified PSU that allows me to plug and play each cable. The one that came with the unit, I had a difficult time plugging them in, because the words or label on the board do not correspond to what is on the PSU. In addition, can someone recommend a PSU that is not too expensive adn not a crappy one either, please.

what is the difference between the 6400 and 6420, are there any considerable differences in these processors.

The 6x20 CPUs have 4MB caches, instead of the 2MB caches on the 6xxx CPUs. Go with the 6420 if you are choosing between the two. Only $1 more on Newegg.

I am aware of the 2MB versus 4MB, I just do not know the significance of these numbers and the end result to me. I actually got a 6400 instead of a 6420, so I am trying to figure out if it is worth returning for all the shipping and restocking charges that come with it.

Its not worth the shipping and restocking charges. You would probably not even notice the difference between the two performance wise.

When it comes to case connections, they are different for every case and motherboard. You'll have to use trial and error to figure out which connection goes where.

I have purchase the case and power supply posted above, everything powers up now, except there are 3 major problems, the SATA power cable is not long enough to reach both the harddrive and the dvdr at the same time, the power light on the computer does not come on, neither does the harddrive light, I am not thinking, what is the resolution to this SATA power cable situation, considering that the hdd and the dvdr are both SATA, and this PSU only has 2 that are not long enough.

Do you have the power light and HDD light connected to the appropriate motherboard? If so... take it off... turn them 180 degrees and reinsert them and see if that works.


As for your SATA power cables and the length problem... can you rearrange the HDD and optical drive so the power cables can reach them? If not... you can try one of these cables which could work...

I just purhcased the Gigabyte 965P MB myself, and it has a great manual that comes with it.

You will need to have your case manual, the MB manual, and the PS manual all laying open at the same time if you are a novice builder. Cross-reference each wire, such as fan controls from the case to the MB (or PS), on-off switch, etc. It really isn't all that confusing once you lay everything out. Most connectors will only plug in where they belong anyway.

It might help to use a magnifying glass and a good light to examine your MB also. It has everything you need printed right on the board (connections).

I have gotten everything connected so far, and I am at the stage of the system boot disk error, I have tried to set the CD to boot first, both in the BIOS and some place else I dont remember right now. Anyway here is my situation, if I need to buy Windows XP, what is my best choice, my other computers have XP pro, but I quickly discovered they can not be used on the new build (thanks D3LL). So I quickly realised I need to go buy the software. If I buy home basic, what should I be expecting, is it going to be a widening difference or not, also is $99 dollars the best I can do right now, I was thinking of going to pick one up at Frys or Circuit City. A friend mentioned Linux, but I am leary about installing this, and I also do not want to take a big nose-diving from XP pro to XP home, if they are different.

From a performance standpoint, WinXP Home and WinXP Pro perform the same...WinXP Pro does not perform any faster than WinXP Home. From a feature standpoint, WinXP Pro has more security and networking features than WinXP Home. More info can be found here.

Everything is connected and seems to be working fine. I have some concerns though, for some reason, the USB ports on the mobo seem to identify themselves as Drive E and Drive D, eventhough all I have plugged into them are just printers. This is new for me, I am only aware of external drives displaying the aforementioned characteristics. I was thinking someone might know of a fix for this. In addition anyone aware of a good network assistant program preferably free e.g

I am in need of a network assistant, or something similar that does what the Dell Network Assistant program does or even better. Some that will identify all the connections I have on the different ports and IPs.
