New rig won't stay on!

Just built my first computer, but the power won't stay on for more than a second. Everything's hooked up correctly (As far as I can tell) but still no go. Any help/advice/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the specs:
Mobo: ASUS P5B P965 775
Video Card: eVGA Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT 256MB
CPU: Intel E6600 2.4 GHz
RAM: 2 sticks of 1 GB Corsair Value Select 240 Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667
HDD: 250 GB SeaGate SATA
PSU: Enhance 500W
Floppy: 1.44 MB Sony
CD/DVD: Lite-on dvd burner

We need more info than that. What happens. Does it click on for a quick second? Does it POST (go to a picture on the monitor), do fans spin. Walk us through exactly what happens.

The motherboard power led lights up, fans spin, leds in the front come on, everything seems to be working, it just cuts right back off a second after it all starts up.

Sorry, forget to mention if it POSTs, and no, it doesn't. There's no clicks or anything either, unless you count pressing the power button on, just the sound of the fans starting up.

Try building your system outside the case with minimal parts. Keep in mind that you MUST remove the motherboard from the chassis in order for this method to work.

Double check and make sure your heatsink and fan is installed right. Sounds like the CPU is overheating.

thanks for the suggestions, i may try minsonngo's first cause taking everything out of the case is a tad bit more work than his lol. Anyway, I would post back tonight, but i'm at my cousin's right now, so i'll tr them tommorow and reply back with results. Thanks everyone!

Well when you do the heatsink & fan installation... you should do it with the motherboard outside of the case.


The heatsink & fan mis-installation is one of the most common mistakes.

alright, well i just took the fan and processor out and theres a gray goop or something on the processor and the fan on the sides facing each other. I'm no expert at this, but that doesn't seem like it should be there. Should I wipe it off? And what's causing that to happen?

I just tried starting the computer out of the case, with the bare basics, following that link that kram sent me. Still no go, it does the same thing. Any ideas?

First thing to check is power. Do you have both the 24pin ATX connection and the separate 4pin (2x2 square) connection in place?

I think so, I only have a 24 pin connector though. I've looked for a 4 pin one but there's not one that matches, except that the 24 pin one spilts into a 4 pin and a 20 pin connector.

Aha, that is the catch. Do you have a link to the PSU you purchased? I suspect that yours is an older model. New motherboards require both power connections to function properly.

1x 20/24pin Main Power

1x 8/4pin CPU-VR Power Connector


Looks like your PSU does have both the 24 pin main PSU connector and the 4 pin ATX12V one. You need both of them plugged into the motherboard like Alaron suggested.

If your motherboard takes the 8-pin connector instead of the 4-pin... then plug in the 8-pin connector from the PSU to the motherboard.

Problem solved! I didn't realize that the 8 pin connector split into 2 4 pin connectors to plug into the other power slot. Makes me feel a little stupid but, oh well lol.

Alright, unfortunatley the god of technology is not on my side...i've got another problem. The computer starts up, but doesn't POST and beeps at me. It beeps one long one and 3 short ones. I tried using only one stick of RAM but it did the same thing, then switched em, and again, the same thing. It ran fine when i set it up out of the case, picture showed up and everything. I dunno what happened.

Do you have the video card installed right? Try reseating it to make sure.

Wow, that did it! Thanks! Seems to be working now. I'm fixing to leave so I won't be able to try setting bios and installing windows for another 2 hours or so, but if I have any more questions I'll post again. Thanks again!
