$1600 gaming build - standard Pv.P check please
Ok this is pretty much the standard build that's been done around here for the last few months so everything should about as ideal of a system for the price as I can make it. I have a little under $200 left over to play with so I was wondering if anyone could come up with any worthwhile upgrades. I thought about the EVGA superclocked 8800GTS but that's $100 more for something I could do myself. Pretty much the same deal for the E6700 processor, just doesn't seem like worth the upgrade. With the RAM I picked out, I should be able to just nudge the 6600 up to 6700 speeds with little problem if I ever feel the need. Any ideas, or should I just go with it as is and just enjoy the new system and bit of mad money?

That Xtremegamer vanilla looks alot like the X-Fi Xtreme Audio, which I haven't heard good things about. It supposedly uses the cpu to produce sound effect instead of producing them itself. Not sure if this applies to the xtremegamer.
The XtremGamer Fatality could be a good upgrade.

I did quite a bit of research into the X-Fi before really considering it. The Xtreme Audio isn't a true X-Fi, but a similar chip to the Audigy. The XtremGamer is the lowest tier true X-Fi. Same chip as the Fatality, just missing a few of the advanced options (X-RAM being the main one).

Adding this mainly for anyone doing later searches. It's 4 AM and I just finished an hour and a half marathon google fest on case info. Looks like a lot of new motherboards are using a new header spec for front audo called HDA (or HD audio) replacing the older AC97 spec. Looks as of the time I'm writing this not a lot of cases front audio ports are designed for HDA yet. It does make a difference. The new HDA header has line sense which allows the motherboard to route sound to either the front jack or the rear jacks depending on if a headset is plugged in or not. Much better then front ports just out right killing your rear jacks as they used to.
Long story short, the P182 has HDA front audo, and the P180 has legacy AC97. Thought some people might like to know before this leaks out of my brain when I go to bed. |

Ok, I've decided to eat the cost of a new P5K and take the risk. I went ahead and factored in the cost of Directrons in-house testing option for now to reduce the chance of a DOA board. If anyones used it before I'd appreciate some feedback. I figure $10 is worth it when your dealing with a brand new $200 board. I also went ahead and switched up to Vista. I figure that's the driver set these boards are going to be written for. It's still scary how cheap this still is. I feel like I'm skimping on something.

If you really want to overclock in the future, you can upgrade the memory. Get some G.Skill HZ.
$110 w/free shipping for some nice stuff. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231065 Ordered a second kit myself. |

Mr.Ferrari, thanks. That's a good priced upgrade for OC ability. Will be ordering either tomorrow or Monday and will defiantly be witting a review when I get everything together.

Well I just placed the order, and it was not a lot of fun. My newegg orders are never a problem, but the combination of two $500+ orders at different places over minutes triggered my banks auto fraud alert and froze my card. Guess I shouldn't really complain. It's a real good thing, but a total pain in the neck. ZipZoomFly is probably going to love me for getting a card declined twice then coming back and putting the order though after doing an ID check with the bank. And just to add insult to injury, I'm not at home now. I'm off school at my parents place so it's separate bailing and shipping addresses. I will not be surprised if I get a call from ZZF tomorrow.
At least all I had to do is hit a website and give my info so it wasn't too bad. Would have been real pain if they had to do that stuff over the phone since it's a holiday. On the bright side, shipping was all of $38 for everything and rebates are going to more then cover that so the deals were good. Last edited by Staren; 05-28-2007 at 06:01 PM. |

Oh I plan to, especially since I want to see how good of a wiring job on a stock p182 I can pull off without breaking out the Dremel. Just got a new PowerShot A550 too. Gotta love holiday deals.
The latest toys always get you more excited don't they? You know I may just have to borrow the Plasma in my dads media room as a testing monitor since I didn't bring an monitor with me...

It does... but I need to do my accounting first... my wallet is thin after paying for summer school courses at the university.

Tell me about it. The only reason I'm able to do this build really is I just finished my bachelors and am on break until I start my masters in the fall. I'm not exactly a spender so I have orders from both grandmothers to *spend* my graduation money on something I want rather then save it.
