Start with this trouble shooting system : http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409
Also post your specs so we know what hardware we're dealing with.

We need more detailed specs, including brand and wattage of your PSU.
Follow the instructions in Pam's link carefully and let us know what happens.

For specs we mean :
Your processor your motherboard, make and model ram, make and type power supply , wattage and manufacturer Hdd, cd-rom, and so on. Is this a custom build or an OEM ( Dell, etc.) computer. A description of what the original problem was and why you think it might have been the processor instead could also help. We can't figure anything out from 256mb ram and 1/2 of an XP install |

Did you clean off the old thermal compound on the bottom of the heatsink and processor die itself? You need to do this... and then reapply a new layer of thermal compound on to the heatsink before reinstalling it on top of the processor.
Also double check and make sure nothing is shorting out the motherboard like loose screws and unused standoffs. Also be sure everything is installed properly and reseat the memory... video cards... power cables if you need to. You can also try resetting the CMOS via the jumpers on the motherboard or removing the CMOS battery for 15 minutes or so. |

Yes... that is could be part of the problem... the thermal compound may lose some of it's thermal conductivity properties with age. You should really clean off the old and reapply a new paper thin layer to the bottom of the heatsink. Artic Silver 5 is a good compound to use... look for it.
If that does not fix your problem we can look elsewhere. Also... what is the brand and model of the PSU (power supply unit)? Last edited by minsonngo; 05-24-2007 at 12:02 PM. |

Oh... and if you getting the Arctic Sliver thermal compound I recommended... here are the instructions to use: http://www.arcticsilver.com/ins_rout...2intelas5.html

I use high-purity isopropyl alcohol and a LINT FREE cloth (a lens cleaning cloth or a coffee filter). You can also use ArctiClean steps 1 and 2.
NEVER use any oil or petroleum based cleaners (WD-40, citrus oil based cleaners and many automotive degreasers) on the base of a heatsink. The oil, which is engineered to not evaporate, will fill in the microscopic valleys in the metal and significantly reduce the effectiveness of any subsequently applied thermal compound. |
