New build - can't even switch on...

Hey guys looking for a bit of help please.

Have been putting together a new PC:

Striker Extreme mobo
Intel E6600 CPU
Seagate 320gb drive
Hiper 620w PSU
2x Crucial 2gb RAM
My old nVidia 6600 GT video card.

Everything is connected as far as I can see. Switch the PSU on and get power on the motherboard and the message "CPU INIT" on the LCD poster. Press the power button and nothing...very confusing.

If anybody can suggest ways to remedy this I'd be grateful.

Do you have the power button on the case hooked up to the right pins on the motherboard? Try turning the connector 180 degrees and reinserting it that way and see if it works. You can try shorting the two power pins with a screw driver and see if it will power on.

Is your power supply plugged into the outlet? Is the PSU set to 115v in the back if your in the US? Do you have both the 24 pin and 4(or 8) pin power supply connectors connected to the motherboard?

Are you sure there is nothing shorting out the motherboard... loose screws and such? Do you have the brass standoffs mounted between the case and the motherboard?

Yup have the power button hooked up and both power connectors attached to the mobo.

I'm actually in the UK and the PSU doesn't appear to have a switch between the different currents.

I have a coolermaster wavemaster case and the mobo is mounted directly on to the tray - do I still need to use spacers?

Yes! The case would be shorting out the motherboard.

There should be brass standoffs or plastic ones included with the case... use them... hopefully no damage was done.

OK - I'm an idiot - I've put the standoffs in and am now powering up - don't know if everything is working ok as I need to put all the other cables back in.

However, as it's midnight I am going to have a fresh look at it in the morning.

Thanks very much for your help. I'll report back if everything's ok - or with some more questions (hopefully the first)
