X2 to Core2DUO upgrade advice
Hello:
I'm currently looking at replacing: A8n5x|Opteron 165 Denmark x2 1.8ghz|2048 Patriot PC3200 with ASUS P5B LGA 775 Intel P965 Express Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 Also: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model LH-20A1L-06 (For compatability with the P965 chipset) I currently have a Powercolor x1950PRO 512mb which I would be keeping the same. I'm wondering what kind of performance gains I would see with gaming/multitasking/etc when switching from the X2 to the Core2Duo and from the DDR to the DDR2 ram? I plan on upgrading my video card sometime next year or so. EDIT: Couple other thoughs: I don't really NEED a new PSU but how far into the future as far as requirements would a CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W Power Supply - Retail last? 2-years or so? Also, would it be advisable to turn my old parts into a fileserver? How would I go about accomplishing this? TIA, Klutz

You should see a good deal of performance boost with both the new cpu and ram.. The Core 2 Due will out perform anything that AMD currently has out..

You wouldn't see a difference in everyday internet surfing, but, you'd see improvements in gaming and heavy multitasking. The Corsair power supply should be sufficient for any single video card now. I sure hope it would be enough for future video cards as well (but, at the rate video cards are going...).
If you want to have a file server locally, than just set it up as a regular computer. That would probably be the easiest. You'd just need a basic video card, hard drive space, case, etc.
