New P5B, E6600 overclocking build.
My budget is $1100 (no rebates), but I would like to stay slightly under it. This dose not include mouse, Keyboard, speakers, monitor. I am planning to do a p5b and E6600 job, but I'm planing to overclock. I'm thinking of overclocking reasonably not not extremely high (3.4ghz hopefully, maybe less, I know every system is different and won't have a guaranty to work at any speed), but still keep under my budget down. This is where most my questions come up, on ram and p5b vs p5b deluxe.
p5b vs p5b deluxe: All I really care About on these boards for comparsion is Wifi and overclocking, the rest of extra features dont make a difference to me. $193 - ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131028 $120 - ASUS P5B http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131030 $45 - LINKSYS WMP55AG PCI Dual-Band Wireless A+G Adapter http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16833124116 So, $165=P5b w/ PIC wifi - v.s. - $193 P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP Are the overclocking benefits worth $28? and would the onboard wifi be slower? (I'm using a linksys wrt54g router) _________________ RAM: All are 2gb (2 x 1gb) $70 - CORSAIR XMS2 DDR2 675 (PC2 5400) 4-4-4-12 (These actually look pretty good) http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145015 $83 - G.SKILL DDr2 800 (PC2 6400) 5-5-5-15 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098 $95 - G.SKILL DDr2 800 (PC2 6400) 4-4-4-12 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820231087 $110 - G.SKILL DDr2 800 (PC2 6400) 4-4-4-12 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...N82E1682023106 The $110 g.skill is pushing the budget and $95 is close. The Xms2 actually looks really nice, but hopefully it will overclock to 850-900mhz at stock speeds? (maybe I'm to optimistic) What do you suggest? _________________ Case: Sunbeam Quarterback $60 (I think this should have enough airflow) http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811166036 PSU: Corsair 520hx $125 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817139001 CPU: C2D E6600 $225 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115003 Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140 $36 - LITE-ON.... sata http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106057 $270 - PNY 8800GTS 320MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133193 Is it worth pay $20 more for the Evga? _________________ Heatsink: 1: Buy a cheap (about $30) heatsink now 2: Buy a nice (about $50) one later. 3: By a cheap one now buy a better when I feel I need a faster clockspeed. Here option three seems the best at the moment. Quick question, will use a non-stock heatskink void the cpu's warranty. Thanks for everything, the community has been very helpful.

For 3.4, you'll need ~377 fsb. Thats getting kinda close to the limit of the average P5B, but is way under then max of the P5B Deluxe.
I will warn you ahead of time, there has been a brick wall between the fsb of 360 of 399, but from 400 and above, the board will loosen up and reach its limit after that. Just saying because a specific number between that might or might not be hard to achieve. I would go with the P5B Deluxe if possible, it will give you maximum headroom for future overclocking. -For Memory, I would go with the G.Skill HK or HZ. HZ being the slightly better overclocker if you can afford it. -You could probably stay with the stock heatsink if your temps are ok, if you feel the need for a heatsink, go for the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Available from $25-35. Have you already sorted out your video and hdd choices? |

Yeah, if you fry the chip (which I think would be hard to do) during overclocking you aren't going to get it replaced under warranty. You'd have to foot the bill for a new CPU. That's an implied risk with overclocking.

Thanks Mr.Ferrari, I didnt see the HZ had free shipping
, and I think if it was a $5 difference I would go evga but $20 isn't to much for service i might not use. Plus i would go over budget.
