Help with computer problem please!

I have recently attempted to create a custom built computer for the first time, i have followed guides and got the computer all made but when i power it up it makes a loud high pitched noise! how do i get it working properly, it turns on theres just a huge noise.

I also have a second question, my new computer has a 320mb 8800GTS graphics card in it, and has 2 DVI slots on the back of it, my monitor has a DVi and a VGA, but i only have lead for VGA, but i have 2 apadtops which turn a VGA into a DVI. But the adaptor only works in the graphics card, if i put an adaptor on my monitor it doesnt fit, will the monitor still work?

The high pitched noise is most likely the overheat alarm indicating the cpu is heating rapidly. Most likely caused by improper heat sink installatiion. Those four corner pins can be tricky to install. Remove the mobo from the case and recheck the hsf attachment using the link below as a guide.

You'll get a better picture using a DVI to DVI cable than using adapters. Worth the investment to order a cable.

It may spin, but if not installed properly the cpu will over heat and burn up...

no it's definatly installed properly, i reinstalled it, got my brother to check, hes built one before he says its fine, its all in right, all the 4 pins in right, it spins, the paste is perfect, it just beeps and turns off, it has to be something else. Was i meant to jumper the speed of it or something, because i havnt done that i have an asus motherboard, it has a light that lights up before i even turn on the pc

Its time to do this out of the case build... Follow the instructions, post back what you find.. You might want to also remove the heatsink/fan again and check the underneath of the cpu to see if there are any burnt spots..

Try leaving only the essentials installed... processor, video card, processor heatsink & fan, power supply, ONE stick of memory... and see if it still gives you trouble. If it does... one or more of those components are faulty.

By the way... you said it beeps... how many beeps?

Also... did you connect the heatsink & fan connector to the set of pins on the motherboard labeled CPU_FAN (found next to the memory slots)?

Please double check and make sure the heatsink & fan is installed properly. I know others have said it already... but this is one of the most common mistakes made.

Also... do you have the brass standoffs set between the motherboard and the case? If not... the case is probably shorting out the motherboard

Do you have both the 24-pin main connector and the 4-pin ATX12V connector from the PSU connected to the motherboard correctly?

yes all that is definatly correct, its a loud high pitched continous noise that doesnt change it pitch or tone, or even stop, and after 3 seconds the computer turns itself backoff again, and no there arnt any burnt spots anywhere, i think i may have connected something wrong somehow? thats the only thing i can think of

i have

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 - Installed 100% correctly, no problems checked it over/over

Point Of View 8800GTS 320MB DVI HDCP PCI-E Graphics Card - Plugged in only, screwed to case, fits, port is out back of computer, monitor is joined to it

Seagate 7200.10 320GB SATAII/300 - This is joined by a power supply cable that fit into it, and a red data lead leading to a port on the motherboard

Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400, plugged in, fit nicely, should be fine

Coolermaster IGreen 500W PSU -
joined to everything,
24 pins + 4 extra 12v pins on motherboard,
1 goes to harddrive
1 goes to cd drive

Gigaybte GZ-X1 Black ATX Mid-Tower Case -
has 2 built in fans which are joined to the motherboard.

When i start my computer all the fans spin, heatsink, gfx card, 2 extra case fans, the LED lights etc.
theres just one loud continous noise then it turns off, i dont even have speakers installed so i dont know how the noise is being made.

Thats basicly all i did, i joined all those cables and put the pieces in

Yes the motherboard is held of the plate by bras screws and yes everything is in its right place

clipped in fine it doesnt budge
plugged in correctly/fan spins

i got 1 continous whine and 4 beeps afterwards this time

Do you have the 6-pin PCI-E power connector from the PSU hooked up to the video card?

i was just screwing around and realised id idnt have that 6 pin to the video card LOL

that fixed the loud whining noise, now it starts up and i hear
1long beep followed by 3 shorter beeps

and my monitor gets no signal

i had a double ended VGA lead, with a DVI apadtor so it fits to the graphics card, but the lead is still plugged into the VGA port in the monitor.

so i have 1 long beep 3 short
DVI into card but VGA into monitor
No display

Now what! =(

1 long followed by 3 short means memory test failure.

Try reseating your memory modules. If that does NOT work try leaving only one stick at a time now and see if it works...

EDIT: Nevermind... ignore the above. The motherboard you have has an AWARD bios... 1 long and 3 short means "No video card or bad video RAM"...

Try reseating the video card in the PCI-E slot and see if that works... otherwise the card may be bad... the only way to confirm is to try the same card in a working system OR swapping in a working card into the new system.
