Photo system suggestions
Gonna be running CS3 and Vista. What stupid first timer mistakes am I making? Not a gamer. Straight ACR and PS3 work. On a VSAT in the Quirimbas Islands, so apologize for any delays. Back in civ Saturday. Think I may be getting too much motherboard. Will the 4GB be noticeable with RAW handling?
DOn't mind spending more, but only for bang for the buck.

Go with DDR2-667 instead if you don't plan on overclocking. Corsair ValueSelect is worth a look... and it gives you the best "bang for the buck" deal.

4GB of memory is good... but you need the 64-bit version of Windows to utilize the full amount. 32-bit versions only use between 3 to 3.2 GB of memory max.


As for video cards... look at the newer 8800 series... EVGA is a good brand to stick with.


For the motherboard... all you really need is the ASUS P5B. Its a good board and recommended by most on here when going with an Intel build.


As for optical drives... Lite-Ons are generally a good buy and highly recommended.

Good choice on the PSU. Seasonics are great. Here is an alternative that is also great and will save you some cash: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139001

You also do not need a aftermarket heatsink and fan... the retail boxed CPU will come with one already which will allow you to avoid voiding the warranty on the CPU.

So bang down on RAM, DVD, video, motherboard, PSU and crank up to 64 bit? Will post new specs when I can get to update. Southwesterlies here are a bitch on the VSAT, but the ocean sounds nice.

Your not really "banging down" on the memory... The CPU FSB will bottleneck the memory... so anything over DDR2-667 will not really be beneficial to you unless you plan to overclock. You can read more about it here: http://www.directron.com/fsbguide.html

The DVD drive is up to you... Lite-Ons are just what we tend to recommend here since they give you your money's worth.

The PSU is your choice also... the one you picked out is good... the Corsair I suggested is good... they both are in the same price range basically... so its your pick. You can not go wrong with either one.

The ASUS P5B motherboard is cheaper than the one you picked out and will still work great. No point in getting an very expensive board if you are not even going to use the features on it.

For what you're doing I wouldn't get the Raptor, I'd go with another 500GB Seagate for the storage space instead. Raptor's are noisy and don't perform much better than the 7200.10 Seagate SATA 3.0 HDDs.

And that motherboard is not meant for your type of work...it's a gamer motherboard and you're building a work machine. I'd look at one of the ASUS P5B motherboards...they're stable, proven performers.

I'd also suggest getting Corsair ValueSelect RAM instead of Kingston...seen too many sticks of Kingston go bad over the years to trust them anymore.

You also don't need a third party heatsink if you're getting a retail CPU. Just use the one supplied with the processor...it's fine.

You also don't need a 550 watt power supply...a good quality 450 watt should be more than enough.

And for photo work you really don't want a NVidia video card, you want a ATi or Matrox video card for the excellent 2D image quality and performance. NVidia GPUs do better with 3D games.

Dam, Hawaii couldn't be farther from Mozambique if ya tried. Thanks for the suggestions. Putting system on the Raptor and would really like the boot speed I think. Only programs on the Raptor. Storage on HD and external HDD. Am I being dumb here for only an additional 2.5k RPM? Stuck with a Sony TX for editing my RAW files here which boots in a week. Gonna be doing a huge project here soon and want the right HP.

Looks like you have two ASUS motherboards on your list. The regular P5B and the Deluxe version. You only need the regular P5B.

And for your optical drive... get the SATA version instead of the IDE one you have selected.


And look for a ATI or Matrox video card as Cricket suggested.

Thanks. A lite-On shoulda been on there. Sorry this rig is nowhere near as sexy as some of your gaming rigs you guys deal with. Just want it fast to allow lots of hard editing. Have several big features popping up.

Right now I have two computers with Matrox G550s and I look at and edit photos quite a bit on the weekends. I can tell the difference between the Matrox video cards I have and the ATi or NVidia based video cards in the computers of friends and family members..the 2D images just don't seem as sharp.
