I think I need to remove some arctic silver...

Well, I'm trying like hell to install World of WArcraft on my new build...and everytime it tried to do the update, the computer would shutdown...on restart it said it was because the cpu overheated. So after a few more tries I got the update downloaded, and then it wanted to download something else and the computer shut itself down again...also saying the cpu overheated.

The first day I got my build put together, I tried out ghost recon that came with the video card and the same thing happened 5 minutes into the game. I was telling someone that I put more than enough arctic cooler on the cpu and they said I probably put too much on and this can cause it to overheat.

What do you guys think? Is it from the arctic silver or what...

AND....how do I go about removing the arctic silver that's already on there...with a dry towel or something?

To remove artic sliver... use a lint free towel and rubbing alcohol.

Too much artic silver will have the opposite effect. You need to put the recommended amount. Double check and make sure the heatsink and fan is installed correctly also.

EDIT: You can get good instructions here about removing and applying artic silver: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm

yeah, sounds like the heatsink not being attached right, or too much arctic silver!

use this:
http://www.petrastechshop.com/arthmasupu60.html (worth the $6, and will make the next coat of arctic you put on better)
and
A lint free cloth (coffee filters work great)

I use Q-tips and then alcohol-dipped Q-tips to clean up the final residue, and then dry Q-tips to wipe up the alcohol residue.

Use as high alcohol % as possible.

Send a message via AIM to Mr.Ferrari
X2 for the Q-Tip + alcohol suggestion. And dont be cheap! Feel free to use as many of those suckers as you need.

I've heard (i believe it was from cricket) that coffee filters work as well.

But it's okay for the cpu to still be attached to the motherboard while I do this?
Do I have to remove the mobo from the case for anything?

9 times out of 10, the CPU is still plugged into the mobo and the mobo is still in the case. That 1 time that it was out of the case was for a full system cleanout.

Just be sure to ground yourself before coming into contact with the CPU.

Don't forget to check out the installation instructions on arctic silver's web page.

Put a one and a half sunflower seed sized blob of AS onto the CPU's heat spreader. I've seen some guide that says put a grain of rice worth, but that's a bit too little in my opinion. Other places say to spread the AS in a thin layer all over the heat spreader.

Add enough so that when the heatsink is pressed onto the CPU, it forms an Arctic Silver pancake. The idea is not to make an AS sandwhich but to use it to fill in the pores between the CPU and heatsink.

Oh crap....
Okay, I mannaged to clean off all the old arctic silver...but now putting the heatsink back on...I can't find the directions that came with the processor to show the correct orientation the heatsink is supposed to face.....so I put it back on how I think I took it back off....I've got 2 legs stuck in the mobo AND CAN'T GET THEM BACK OUT...and 2 that won't stick in at all...so basically I have a lopsided heatsink and I don't know what to do...I can't for the life of me get the 2 legs to detach from the mobo...it seems like I'm gonna break something if I pull too hard.

Does it really matter which way the heatsink is facing?

The legs on the heatsink are the kind you supposed to push through and turn...but I remember when I first installed it...they never really seemed to turn all the way...it held but always seemed a little loose...maybe I never really had it installed correctly in the first place...damn, why do they have to make such a stupid way of connecting the thing!!!!

What kind of processor is this anyway? I didn't see the type mentioned in any of the above posts.

Good question Cricket. For some reason I just thought it was a Socket 775 processor which is why I linked to the HSF guide for it.

Yeah, it is...with a pentium d.

Well, I had to take out the mobo from the case...it turns out I had the legs twisted in the wrong direction to make it lock...putting the mobo back in, i noticed there was a loose screw under it somewhere so I had to take it back off again...this has been a frustrating past few hours.
Got it up and running again finally...using it right now.

I haven't tried to do any gaming, cause I've had enough frustrations for 1 day.

A weird thing though...when I first hit the power button, the computer shut down after seconds, this happened again on the second try, third try..up and running. I also remember this happening when I first got this build together about a month ago...hopefully this doesn't mean something is wrong.

Is this issue still going on?
