Question Confused with rebuild

just wanted to pick a few brains

This is the current set up......

Processor: Intel Pentium D Dual Core (3.4GHZ)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-8I945P-G-RH, 4 DDR II DIMM memory slots (supports up to 4GB memory)
Ram/Memory: 2GB OCZ Gold PC2-5400 DDR2 667MHZ
Hard drive: 320 GB Western Digital Caviar SATA2 7200rpm 16MB cache
Graphics: XFX 7950GT XT, 512MB PCI-Ex16, Mem 1460MHz, GPU 570MHz, 24 Pipes,
Power Supply: Aspire Chameleon 550 Watt

Poss. new one
Processor: Change to Intel Pentium Dual 2 core E6600 (on sale)...

Motherboard: Not sure on a motherboard....any ideas?...thinking of running Sli.

Ram/Memory: 2GB OCZ Gold PC2-5400 DDR2 667MHZ ...keep the same...maybe need more?..i know vista needs 1gb standard..

Hard drive: might just put a 400GB one....

Graphics: XFX 7950GT XT, 512MB PCI-Ex16, ....I’m thinking just buy another one of these and run them in sli...saving a expense of buying two brand new cards...I love my games but not extreme to go spend £300+ on cards ..Lol these are 7 series so is there any joy from having a 680i motherboard?...

Power Supply: Aspire Chameleon 550 Watt ...choice of a thermal take 680w....but I think that possibly over kill...

motherboard seems to be my main pain in the butt at the moment...

any ideas ?

Intel and SLI are still not the best of friends, even though they've improved. If you must have sli I would go with the Asus P5N32-E SLI. But if not, better, go with the Asus P5B series.

Memory is fine.

Seagate 7200.10 would be a good choice for the hard drives.

See above on the videocards.

Now this is your weak point. Junk that Aspire psu and get a quality one. A 500w would be fine for a single card, and something between 550-600w for SLi with 2 7950gt's.

Go here to find out what PSU is recommended for you particular SLI setup: http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html

I would go with the P5B lineup of boards too.

thanks for your advice....i will be adding some bits too such as lighting and the case is windowed so id allow a little bit more then i need to make sure its got all the power it needs.aspire psu has been good for me ...only once as it ever cut out from me but its just got poor air venting on it

my first chioce was the giggabyte but that was just coz ive used it since my first build

looking about the cheapest i got it for a Asus P5N32-E SLI so far is £114.00......($226.35) Good price?..

any certain Asus P5B boards?... they better or worst then P5N ? spec & price wise

If you not running SLI... go with the ASUS P5B lineup... the regular P5B should be fine unless you need some other features that the regular P5B does not offer.

I would stay away from Aspire. They have a higher rate of failure. You probably just "lucked out" to have your current Aspire PSU working fine.

The Asus P5N32-E SLI is $210 USD, so the price you mentioned is correct.

Yes... that is what most people do. They run one card 1st while saving up for the 2nd indentical card.

I wouldn't buy a motherboard from ebay. If there are issues with it... you are going to have a hard time.

The P5N32-E SLI PLUS board has:
2 x PCI Express x16 slots which support SLI at full x16 speed for both blue slots
1 x PCI Express x16 which is for another card such as another video card running a x8 speed (white slot) only though
