Hey Guys! Little Help

Hey guys Im completely new to building custom PC's. I heard you guys are very helpful so I came here :P

Heres what I need

A Powerful PC with lots of Hard Drive Space (at least 250GB could be more)
I need the graphics card to be very very powerful, and to be able to run the newest games that have very high end requirements without any problem at all.
I also need it to be very fast (= OR > 3GHZ)

As you might have guessed, im using it for gaming primarily, and i really need a solid high end computer.

Price Anything = or < $1000 Total

Don't factor in OS, i already have that covered.

Any and all help will be appreciated!

Just to get you started. Modify it to suit your needs.

It comes out to $660.85 (without the video card or case)... so the remaining part of you budget can go towards a video card and case.

Just a suggestion, you might want to look at the P5K:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131180

Or other respected boards with the new P35 chipset:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121314
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128050

It is new...so it can have some bugs. But Asus has supposedly done a superb job on it, and im not hearing of any bad bugs yet.

Just one note on the P5K. Most of us here like what we see so far very much, but are holding recommendations to first time builders until a few of us have actually built with it. Old time builders love it, but it hasn't been tested for ease of use yet so we can't be 100% sure how newbie friendly it is until we've looked one over. Just a heads up. I will actually be building one tomorrow, so I'll be glad to second whubbards suggestion as soon as I have some info to back it up with.

P5B or P5K... both are decent choices. The P5K would "future proof" your build. So... its your choice utimately.

Go with one from EVGA in the Geforce 8000 series lineup.

Ok Guys I have decided to buy the EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR GeForce 8600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail

listed on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...Force+8+series

I thihnk it will be great and will fit into my budget with ease. So far, my calculated costs are

$660 + $139 = $ 799

Big thanks to misongo for helping me... thanks thanks thanks thanks you've helped me far more than you think... and you have saved me a bundle. I was almost going to spend more than $1000 for something not even close to what you have put together for me. Thanks a million times man I really appreciate it.

One more thing remains... a monitor. I don't need anything extravageant, just a simple LCD monitor that'll run all the current games with ease.

Thanks guys!

No problem.

For LCDs go with ACER or SAMSUNG.

Here they are. Just pick one that suits your needs and budget:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...7&name=SAMSUNG

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=Acer+America

ok ive decided to go with this Acer monitor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009088

Once again, it just slides in my budget perfectly

Now everything with the Optical drive has totaled $985

The one last thing remains, a case

I havent picked one out yet. I just need one that has the slots to hold all the other stuff (video card, etc..)

Simple, works, and cheap

Thanks once again misonngo

The case if mainly by preference. Just as long as it fits ATX motherboards you don't have anything to worry about.

Here is one that is good:

It comes with a very good PSU (500 watt Antec Earthwatts) also... which means you can get a great case and PSU together and save a few bucks while you are at it. You won't need the Corsair PSU I suggested previously if you go with this case and PSU combo.

Thumbs up

you are amazing...

Everything put together costs exactly $1000 which is my budget.

I'm really happy I can get a high end computer like I always wanted. I've had to live with a really bad computer 40gb hard drivbe, 32mb video card, 800mhz processor for too long and I wanna start playing good games on the PC again. I have a 256mbRAM at home so it will increase the 2gig memory a little.

Thanks thanks thanks. can't thanks ya enough!!!

What do you mean by this? You want to use add the stick you have now to your new build?

I'm not sure if it will be compatible. Besides... even if that stick is compatible... it probably will bottleneck your new sticks you are buying. Plus it will not allow you to run the new sticks in Dual Channel configuration mode (requires you to install memory in like pairs) which gives you a small performance boost.

So just leave that old stick of memory out of the new system and you will be golden.

thanks for the advice. I'll leave it out then, and maybe sell it for some little cash.

256mb isn't going to get you much cash...

but you actually might possibly be able to put it in the build

I wouldn't recommend it. Mixing and matching different brands can cause issues. And this will disable the Dual Channel feature on the motherboard.

yeah, good point.

ignore me.

Why don't you just keep it in your other computer, and have a backup PC. Or turn the old PC into a home server.

ok im pretty new to the high tech slang, please tell me what these mean

overclocking

Also, im getting the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003

and it says its intel core duo 2.4ghz. Oblivion recommended system req. says it has to be 3ghz.

In some way does this intel core duo at 2.4ghz equal to 3ghz and above, and able to handle oblivion to its max?

VERY much so. Thats 3ghz for the old netburst based P4's. Slow and hot. You can't really compare clock speeds from this older architecture to the new Core architecture. Basically the Core 2 Duo is MUCH more efficient clock per clock then the P4's were.

So yes, your 2.4ghz c2d will surpass the minimum requirement and way beyond. It will probably take a P4 around the range of 5-6ghz to come close the the performance of your 2.4ghz.

Do NOT get the 8600GT!

According to your first post
Quote:
I need the graphics card to be very very powerful, and to be able to run the newest games that have very high end requirements without any problem at all.
The 8600 is nowhere near powerful enough to do that. Unfortunately the 8800GTS 640MB isn't coming down in price. Why not the 320MB you ask? Some games are already passing this limit, and performance is hampered. Although if you are getting a small LCD a 320MB might be ok.

Thats ok. $350 is a price I can afford for a video card as long as I get what I need

I see its a complete monster. My eyes are fixed on it now

im getting a 17" Acer LCD monitor. Will the video card be too much for my poor LCD screen to handle?

Ya they don't make small video cards anymore. It's the same with processors. In the old days they actually didn't need a fan or heatsink. Now you practicly have tp stick an AC unit on some of them to get them running. Just the way it goes.

I'm guessing your LCD will be running at 1280x1024. So the 8800GTS will be more than enough for at least 2 years imo. You can also overclock it, and around 20% performance increase, but you have to be aware of the temperatures.

The E6600 can hit 3.0 easily. Even my crappy week 44 chip hits 3.0 Ghz, but unfortunately no matter what I do it stops there.

If you want to save a few bucks then go for the 320mb version. At your resolutions you would hardly notice the difference.
