Angry Very strange problem with graphics card in new build

I built my new comp and everything was runing fine installed OS and all was well but on the 3rd start up I heard a pop and could smell smoke so i returned it got a new one. Everything was fine but this time I left it open so I could see. And on the 2nd start up a spark flew out of ethier the graphics card or the pci slot it was in obviously it wouldn't turn on but when I took the graphics card out It would turn on. I put the grapics card into the other PCI slot and turned it on and it worked agian yet I am afriad to leave it there as it could have the same problem. I have an ASUS M2N-sli deluxe MoBo and an AMD 6000 processor with 2 GB of RAM an Nvidia graphics card with a 750 Watt power supply. and I had other problem as well when I plugged in my head phones the comp shut down and in the middle of the installation of a program it shut down agian.

What brand is that 750 watt power supply? Have you seen the sticky thread we have regarding good/bad psu's?

What Power Supply should I get? How many Watts? Who made it? Guide Inside

I'm thinking it's either a bad psu or bad PCI-e slot. Did you plug in the video card power connector?

The graphics card is not directly connected to the power supply ( it does not need external power) though I believe i have a cool max psu

It doesn't matter that the video card is not directly plugged into the power supply... The video card is plugged into the motherboard and the motherboard gets all of it's juice from PSU.. So if you have a bad quality PSU and it's not giving you enough power or Amps to the +12v rail... You're video card can't function properly. Whether or not that is the problem, remains to be seen and can you be more specific on the power supply? You can usually find the name/model number on the actual PSU if you open up the case

here are some quality PSUs:

These PSUs are all good. Somebody else can probably help you with price/performance because I would be guessing. I do know however that the first link, to the PC power and cooling, is meant to be a Great PSU, however I don't really know how it compares to the others. I also personally have an OCZ, and its wonderful, and I also generally recommend FSP, as they are very reliable.

What are your system specs by the way? 700 watts sounds like overkill.

You mean you did not have standoffs installed between the motherboard and the case?

well glad its all figured out.

(by the way how did you mobo even say in the case, like not falling, if you didn't even have any standoffs???)

was the PCI screw from you graphics card holding the mobo up?
