Ideas on an Intel build

Hello,
I built my first PC last year and have been thinking of building another. The only difference is that I want to use Intel instead of AMD. What I want to know is what is the difference between all of the types of Intel (LGA 775, Socket 478, Socket 604, Socket 771) and which type to use (Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Quad)? I also want to know which core is the most recent and which is probably best to use. I hate Celeron so don't even suggest it. I am also willing to spend over $300, so feel free to suggest anything.

Thanks.

The LGA 775 is the most recent and current socket which supports that the core3duos and quads. A board you could look in to is the asus p5b and a Intel Core 2 Duo E6300. That would be right very close to $300 and you can reuse your hardrives, ram and videocard.

EDIT: sorry i didn't see you over 300 so the next cpu up i would suggest is the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 its has a geart performance per dollar. It is $223.00 at newegg.

Agreed. The ASUS P5B and the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 is the way to go.
