building PC for animation help

Hi,

I would really appreciate any suggestions, advise -

looking to build/buy a PC mainly for animation (and gaming ^^)
by animation, I mean - I will be using 3D Studio Max and Maya -- and possibly little video editing as well

I was given these spec by one computer store -- by the way, I'm in Seoul, South korea and dont know how to speak Korean that well ... couldnt really communicate or ask the computer guy any question, but he did understand I want to use it for animation/3d studio max, and this is what he recommend:

CPU - Intel Core2 E6420
MB - ASUS P68
RAM - ddr 2 1g (x2)
VGA - GeForce 9700 GS 256 MB
Power - 400 w

all of this will cost me around 1 million won (including 17" lcd), which is roughly 1 thousand U.S.

your thought, advise, suggestion is welcome - let me know if I could do better or should get a better part ...

budget wise ... well, not sure about the price difference, but perhaps I could spare another $500

thanks, guys

Looks decent.

1) The E6420 is meant to be good.
2) P68? I'm not quite sure what board your talking about.
3) For this build get 667 Ram.
4) (This might be where you improve the system, get the eVGA 8800)
5) Who makes this PSU, its important.
6) Hard Drives?

Yeah if your up for some serious graphic work I would suggest a professional series card such as Nvidia's Quadro or ATi FireGL. They are expensive but they are very nice. Although im not saying you necessarily "require" one.

However, you said gaming, these cards aren't exactly made for gaming, they might play the games, but not very well for what you pay for them. I.E A $200 FireGL won't even play games as a good as a $100 gaming card. This is important if you decide to play any graphically intensive games.

I haven't ever heard of a 9700gs, does he mean the 7900gs?

I have never heard of the Asus P68, do you mean P35 or the such? As long as its a asus board..im not too worried.

Check out this list for PSU yes and no's. Link. A 7900GS would probably be *ok* with a HIGH quality 400w, but I would personally suggest a quality 450w atleast.
