PC Keeps Shutting Down
This is my first time building a PC. I'll link you to the components I used in building it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136074 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115004 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811156062 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813127004 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130026 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106057 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227139 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833162111 When I first turned the PC on, I heard a beeping. I wasn't sure where the beeping was coming from, but found out it was from the on-board speaker. In retrospect, it was probably a bad idea, but I just unplugged the speaker and went on like normal. I formatted the hard drive and installed Windows XP. Everything was fine. I installed a few drivers for my wireless mouse and wireless Internet card. Then I moved the computer from downstairs, where I built it, to upstairs. I didn't do anything or make any new changes, but now the computer didn't work. Now the computer powers up, but then it shuts down again. It doesn't shut down at any particular point during the startup procedure, it just seems random. One time, I entered the BIOS to look for something, and while I was looking around it shut down again for no reason. This reminded me about the beeping. I put the speaker back in and it started beeping again. It's not a continuous beep, but more of a BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP! Sorry if that's all over the place, I just wanted to give any information that might be relevant. Could this be a problem with my power supply? The PSU was pre-installed on the case, but could I have hooked something up to it wrong? I'm getting this feeling because the computer doesn't shut down at any one point during startup, but rather it shuts down after some random amount of time generally under 45 seconds. Thanks for your help, Chris |

Try reseting the ram, video card. Make sure the heatsink/fan is installed correctly on that cpu, intels can be a pain... You may also want to consider replacing that psu in the case it is not of good quality.. PSU from Antec, Enlight, Corsair, etcc are recommended. Your psu is listed here in this quide under BAD.
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 You should also try the out of the case build if reseating the ram and video card doesn't work. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=168456

I found this, hope it helps.
ABIT BIOS beep codes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Basic Beep Codes for ABIT AWARD BIOS Motherboards 1.) One beep - board is working fine 3.) One long beep then machine shuts down - faulty, improperly installed or missing CPU 4.) 1 short(Beep) System booting is normally 5.) 2 short(Beep) CMOS setting error 6.) 1 long - 1 short(Beep) DRAM ERROR 7.) 1 long - 2 short(Beep) Display card or monitor connected error 8.) 1 long - 3 short(Beep) Keyboard Error 9.) 1 long - 9 short(Beep) ROM Error 10.) Long(Beep) continuous DRAM isn't inserted correctly 11.) Short(Beep) continuous POWER supply has a problem 12.) A two-tone siren, generally caused by overheating or out of specification voltages Warning: If you see the 'Magic Smoke' leaking from the back of your computer, shut it down and buy a new computer. Two-tone siren is about the best way I can describe the way the beeps sound. This seems pretty serious. Aside from replacing the PSU as mentioned in one suggestion, is there anything I can do to get the computer to run safely and correctly? |

Thank you doubledragon5 and billstur! Thank you both!
The computer was overheating because the heat sink wasn't installed properly. You're right, dd, the Intel heat sink is a pain. I'm just glad that I didn't fry my CPU when I just unplugged the speaker and ran my PC anyway. Everything is up and running again. No more sirens from my BIOS! |
