First Time Build

Hello everyone !! This is going to be my first pc build. I have been reading these forums for a while and have learned alot from everyone here. I have an idea of what I would like to build. I want a pretty decent gaming pc, but i don't want to spend too much. Limit about $700 for pc alone. I have keyboard, mouse, monitor... I do not plan on doing any overclocking.

The parts I have chosen are a combination of parts that I have seen that are recomended from the forums, and I am not sure if everything I have here will work together or if I made any mistakes on my choices. Any Help would be very much appreciated.

MOBO=Asus P5B
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030
116.99

Case= Raidmax Ninja
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811156177
$69.99

CPU=Intel core 2 duo E4400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115014
$139.00

HDD=Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140
$79.99

Vid Card=Evga GeForce 7900GS
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130056
$149.99

RAM=Corsair XMS2 (2x1GB) DDR2 800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590
$114.00

Optical=Lite-On
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106045
$37.99

I'm not sure If I really need to get a seperate PSU, the case I want comes with a 450 watt psu, but I don't know if that will be sufficient. And I don't know if I am missing any wires or harnesses or anything like that.

Thank you very much for any comments or suggestions. : )

If you do not plan on overclocking, then I would suggest you get the Corsair VS DDR2 667 RAM, rather than the XMS 800.

Corsair 2GB DDR2-667
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098
$64.99

I would also recommend a SATA DVD burner over an IDE one

Lite-on DVD-RW
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106057
$35.99

This will take your total to $656.94

Also don't forget an OS, unless you already have one.

Raidmax power supplies are on our "don't buy" list : http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 so while that case looks like a bargain it may not be.
I would suggest you buy a case without a power supply and then by the power supply separately any one from the "Good" list that fits in with your budget should work for you.

Thanks Jimmy, I will go with that ram and optical. Saves some money too. And thanks Pam123, I am currently researching a different Case and a new PSU.

Well I have found a case and a psu that I like, a little more than I wanted to spend, but I love this case. And since I saved on the memory I firgure why not.
Tell me what you guys think if you don't mind.

Case=Thermaltake Soprano DX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133040
$115.99

PSU=Thermaltake Purepower 500W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153052
59.99

And also just wondering what you guys think, since I am spending a little extra should I spend an extra $85 on the CPU and get the E6600, or is there not that much difference between it and the E4400.

Actually I just changed my mind. I think I am going to go ahead and get the E6600.

Last Thing I Need.

I just got a new egg account, and I am about to buy everything. I decided on that case and power supply. But I do not know what OS I should get. I am not sure about windows vista. Alot of people here say that everyone should wait till the end of the year. I think it is compatible with everything I have, but I would like some opinions, or suggestions please, Thx !!

The case and power supply are an improvement ( as is that 6600! ).
Vista is underwhelming and DRM ridden but the only thing that will save you from it is Microsoft porting DX10 to XP and that's not going to happen.
You can probably keep that video card, and it is a good card, for at least another year and by then the prices of DX10 cards will have dropped sharply.
Looks like you're going to have a nice gaming system.

Parts are on their way.

Ok, I have ordered everything and it is all on its way. I did XP by the way. It all came out to $1000.00, just a tiny bit over my bugget. lol. But I think I will be very happy with what I get. I will keep you guys posted on how my installation will be coming along. Hopefully I get everything by Friday. Thanks again for the help.

Need Help !!

Hey Guys, I just got my parts in today, and I just finished the build. My computer starts up for like a sec, the lights come on and the fan spins for like 1 or maybe 2 seconds. I triple checked my wires and stuff. I don't know what I did wrong. Any suggestions? Thanks.

More problems

Thanks for the help Whubbard. Well I have it booted up and running, and the motherboard settings are configured, but I am having a problem with installing Windows XP. I am at the beggining of installing XP where the blue screens are, and right after I accept agreement, by pressing F8, a screen comes up that says, The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartioned space on this computer, and in the box below it says Unknown disk in this drive, It also says to set up windows press enter or to create a partition in unpartioned space press c. I have tried both and any time I hit a button when I get to that screen a new screen pops up and says, A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for drive updates. Try changing video adapters.

I don't know what any of that means. I have checked like 10 times to make sure that my hard drive is installed right. I have tried it in both Sata spots on my motherboard.

If anyone has any idea of what I should do please help. Thanks So Much !!

P.S. Whubbard, I love your pc. It is a monster.

hmm, the only thing I can think of is that there is an issue with the onboard sata controller. You will also notice that when XP is first starting it asks you to hit F6 if you need to intall HDD drivers. I can't image you would have to...but the fact that it lets you get that far, and then fails is odd.

Another possible thing is that you HDD is bad.
Download the DOS version of seatools here:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...loads/seatools

if you have a floppy disc, put the seatools on it and boot from there. If you don't, you'll have to burn an iso and use the optical drive.

...and yes...i love my pc

Congrats and enjoy! It's always nice when we hear back from folks on how their builds went.
