problem

I 'm building my first pc and I've got my power suppy, hdds and cold cathode kit and heatsink etc ok sorry for rambling I plug in my power supply to the wall and I flip the switch to the on position and I've already plugged in my dvd drive and my lights and I can't get my lights or dvd drive to work and I 'm just trying to see if the lights will turn on or the dvd tray will open without being hookedup to the motherboard basically nothing is working my power supply is a hiper type r 730watt modular my power supply does work because I plugged in my motherboard and the lights came on. asus p5ne sli motherboard I just trying to figure out if I a have broken parts or its my error.
