Optical Drive Stopped Reading Discs
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813127004
DVD-RW: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106057 DVD-ROM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106039 Hard Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136074 Case/Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811156062 I recently build my first PC. My power supply only came with two SATA power connections, so I installed my hard drive and DVD-RW drive. Everything was working great. Then I went to a computer supply store and bought a four-pin Molex-to-SATA power converter cable to hook up my DVD-ROM drive. I was able to get both drives recognized by Windows, but the DVD-RW drive wouldn't read discs and the DVD-Rom drive would. I thought I did something wrong, so I tried to go back to my original setup but got the same problem. Now the DVD-RW drive is recognized by the CMOS and by Windows, but when I put discs in it won't read them. I swapped it out for the DVD-ROM drive and it works perfectly. Do you have any idea of what the problem could be? Are there any settings in the BIOS I have to change? The BIOS lists them as IDE connections. I'm a PC-building novice, so is this what they're supposed to be? Last edited by Phantomwise; 06-16-2007 at 01:00 AM. |

I'm looking at the user's manual located here
http://www.uabit.com/index.php?optio...ge=6&model=323 and in Section 2.6.2 it talks about RAID configurations. What does this mean? Is it relevant to my problem? Last edited by Phantomwise; 06-16-2007 at 12:41 AM. |

UPDATE:
I've been looking around trying to figure this thing out and one thing jumped out at me. My molex-to-SATA power converter -- which I'm not using now because I reverted to my original settings -- is messed up. One of the red wires on the four-pin molex side is completely removed from the white plastic part. The converter has two SATA power connections so the thing has eight wires: two red, four black, and two yellow. That's one red, two black, and one yellow for each SATA converter. Now only one red cord isn't connected. I'm not sure which SATA converter I used for which drive, but I'm thinking ... could I have fried my DVD-RW drive? |
