New Gaming PC First Time

Alright I'm planning on making my own computer for gaming needs. I'm still a newbie so I came here for help. Okay I want to make a good computer cheap but really good. I already have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and speakers. And on my other computer I have a radeon 9200 That ain't being used. Could I use that? For good graphics? Or would I need a new one.

My budge is around 1000$
The OS would be XP.
What I need now is the parts.

AMD or INTEL?

If your Radeon is a AGP video card you can't use it in a new build. All new motherboards only accept PCI-Express 16 video cards now...no AGP slot.

I been reading other people's topics for a while and I'm pretty sure that they said Intel Duo 2 processor would be good. Correct me if I got the processor name wrong.

Intel Core 2 Duo is the chip to build around right now. Here is our standard list to get you started:

Asus P5B Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 CPU
2GB DDR2-667 RAM
eVGA Geforce 7900GS
Seagate 320GB SATA Hard drive
LiteOn SATA DVD Burner
Antec Sonata III (with 500w PSU).

That should hit right around your budget.

Since this is my first computer do you recommend the pcmech build your own computer book/dvd thing?

And how much would a prebuild computer with the same specs cost?

For the Power Supply Unit does it matter what type of Case I get?

Yes, we always recommend our book. Not only does it guide you through the build process, but it is full of addition information and helpful tips. I don't want to sound like a salesman though, you can find some guides online as well that are adequate.

You would be hard pressed to find a prebuilt with those specs for that price. And further, by building yourself, you'll know that every part is quality and you can upgrade in the future.

The thing That Interetesed me is the dvd showing how to do it. If a picture is worth a thousand words. Imagine a video

I saw that covered most of the things add a case in there and would that be it? (Hardware Wise)

My list is everything you would need. The Sonata is a case, I was pointing out that it comes with a good power supply as well.

Okay thx for the help Alaron but some ?'s. Should I just get the Asus P5k Motherboard? Since it is newer and I heard it will soon replace the p5b. I want this pc to last for a while too so should I just upgrade to it or save the cash? Oh and I just need a sound drive and that should be it. So far this is what I got.

The P5K is newer, and i would suggest it. But beware, you could have a few glitches. It has no big known issues, so it comes down to Super Stable vs. Better but 'might be' less stable.

Both of the boards have onboard sound.

Also, i bought the book. And to be honest, it wasn't very useful for me, and putting the PC together was very easy, but it always nice to have a source to just check, so I would recommend it.

The free online books are good as well, however, when you are building, if you get confused it sooo much easier to just have the book sitting next to you.

Stick to the vanilla editions, P5B and P5K for best bang/buck. The others are mostly marketing hype.

The P5K will give you firewire whilst the P5B won't, You need the P5B-E if firewire is something you need.

The P5K will also give you more RAM upgradability, a newer chipset (P35...made for the C2D), and also a higher FSB.

Oh and anybody know a good keyboard I got spare parts for everything but a keyboard and will need a new one for this new computer.

The 965P was originally made fore Core2Duo. The P35 is just an update on preexisting 965 made specifically for compatibility with new 1333FSB Penryn based Core2Duos.

Go and try the keyboards out yourself, whatever works best for you. Logitech and Microsoft are good names, Saitek if you want some bling.

Everything looks great, although I would get the retail version of that liteon. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106057

I have both logitech and saitek...and to be honest, I prefer the logitech. The keys are much nicer to type on. Try and get the G11, or if you want the screen, the G15.

and other than the retail/oem lite-on...yes your list is good.

and for mice:
the logitech MX518, G5, and G7...are just top notch.
