Land Grid Array.
This is a shot of an Intel socket and yes there are gaps in the pins : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Socket775.png

Check and you'll see there's a gap in the photo right where yours is.
Turn your cpu over and check carefully to make sure you line it up correctly for the install because the new socket pins are even easier to bend or break then the old ones that were on the cpu.

Build the PC. If it works, there's no problem. If not ...

This seems like a simple question to anyone who's ever seen a 775 cpu socket before... I don't get it It either looks right or it doesn't

He's risking frying the processor.
What motherboard do you have ( specs are always a good idea to include in your post)?
We'll pull up a picture and check just to make sure and, if the board is defective, then Sofronitsky can get an rma (return merchandise authorization) for the board and tell the vendor (store he bought it from) exactly why.
If it was newegg the turn around time should be less than a week if the weekend and the holiday don't mess things up.

It is if you've ever paid attention I know I wouldn't have given it a second thought until the computer failed to start and I had to figure out why ( and if I'd ended up frying a processor I would have been more than mildly annoyed.).
An even worse scenario would be having it work for a while and then fail for no apparent reason.

http://img2.zol.com.cn/product/5/964/ceMSmke6Xglac.jpg

although the bottom sections cut out it too is missing some of the center blocks.. thais make me hopeful, but I'd still like to hear from someone else that this is normal

Ok, here is the Badaxe2:

http://www.intel.com/products/mother...x/d975xbx2.jpg

All the things in the center are there.

Your board is not as large a photo but it appears they're all there:

Go here : http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/dp965lt/
Download the motherboard photo to My Photos and use "+" and rotate.
You'll see the same row of center blocks that turn up on the zol.com photo and in your own photo (partially blocked since the socket clamp is closed ).
I'd say your question is answered, let the build begin.
I don't remember ever paying any any attention to this before but should it come up again we can now answer.

You don't have to.
If you do so just make sure you jot down any pertinent information where you can find it should it be necessary.

2 more quick questions and I should be set:

1: do i need to bend off the little metal pieces on the inner-side of the I/O shield (they are pushing a little against my mb and moving the holes off a mm or two. does it matter how I install the hsf? should the writing be right side up if Im staring into the case?.. does it matter? thanks for all the help.

No, don't break those little tabs off. Just leave them.

Don't worry about the writing on the lable, you want to just be sure the fan wire is able to connect to the fan header without the wires falling into the fan blades.

Not off to a great start with screwing the motherboard down. The board tends to bend a bit I've noticed.. I couldn't get my last screw in b/c of this bending... so I had to remove all the screws, and as I was doing this I noticed I couldn't get half of them out b/c they had pulled the standoff out!!!! I was told only a small twist with my hand (no wrench) was needed to secure the standoffs... guess that's wrong.

So does anyone have any suggesstions for screwing it in? should I start at one end and work in one direction? the center out? I didn't imagine it would be this difficult.
I thopught I was going to break the mb when I was taking the screws out...

thanks again

First of all, make sure you're using the right sized bolt that fits into the standoff. The bolt size isn't standardized for the standoffs.

Use a small adjustable wrench to secure the standoffs in the motherboard mounting tray. You want them to be installed tight.

Are you following any "build your own computer" tutorial or guide? Or is someone helping you with this build? Or are you just winging it? You really should be following a guide if this is your first build.

Here's one.

Here's another.

The stand off should be screwed down tightly, to the motherboard tray if your case has one or to the case panel if it doesn't, now you know.
The motherboard itself is now placed in the case or on the tray and screwed in lightly.
That means you won't have problems with the board bending later and leaving stray stand-offs to short out the computer when it's time to post.
All screws in?
Now tighten them to hold the board firmly in place ( Don't go crazy , if you want a work out go to the gym.).

Bending the board is not the greatest idea, so you might want to install the memory or the cpu and heatsink/fan with the board on a flat surface, non-conductive please, before you screw it into the case.
