insufficient power?

According to newegg the graphics card I bought only required 400w of power, so I got a 420w PSU. After installing all components fans and LEDs turn on but no signal is sent to monitor. I noticed on my video cards box it actually says i need 450w of power. Is this the most feasible cause to me not getting a signal to my monitor? If so would a 500w PSU be safe or should i go higher?

What are the specs for this computer? List the parts by brand and model including the power supply.

Do this troubleshooter. You must remove the motherboard from the case when doing this. Let us know what happens.

Also, make sure you have all necessary power connections plugged into the motherboard and the video card.

First welcome to the forum. If your video card requires a minimum of 450, then yes a higher wattage psu would be required.. For this I would recommend a good quality 500 or higher like Corsair 520.. Also what brand of psu are you currently using? Compare it to this list on the left are recommended psu and on the right not recommended..

APEVIA X-Dreamer II (with 420w power supply, model was not given)
EVGA GeForce 7900GS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16
Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
GIGABYTE LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 Conroe 1.86GHz
Sony NEC Optiarc 18X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

I already tried the troubleshooter, and got the same results- fans turn on no signal to monitor. All connections are made correctly.

*looking at the list of good/bad PSUs it seems not only mine doesnt have enough power but is also a poor PSU. Should I assume getting a better PSU is the most probably solution?

Like I said try replacing the psu, that is where you need to start first.. If you video card requires a minimum of 450 then 420 is not enough.. And Apevia is a poor quality psu to have in such a nice build...

Should have mentioned that in your first post.

You plugged in both the 24 pin and the 4 pin power connectors into their respective ports on the motherboard?

Yes, there's a very good chance that installing a good quality power supply with enough wattage will solve this problem. I wouldn't be surprised if that Apevia power supply is DOA.
